Re training as a midwife

Has anyone done this?
I'm currently a teacher ( non science subject) and want to retrain.
How did you go about it?
Did you have to do anything extra before you applied?
How hard was juggling studying as well as all the normal family stuff?

TIA x

Look at local universities for their entry requirements to see if you meet them. It’s a competitive course so some volunteering or work experience could benefit your application.

Studying is tough, it’s more intense than regular degrees as it’s 50% theory, 50% (unpaid) placement. Student finance is pretty poor so look into that and consider whether you could afford living costs/childcare etc.

Really look into midwifery and be sure it’s what you want to do. It’s not what many people think it is.

I’m a student nurse. Midwifery is very, very competitive for example my adult nursing course has 350 in its cohort, midwifery has 13 so much harder to get a place. We do 50/50 placement and uni time although at the minute that’s different with the pandemic. The placements are shifts and unpaid.

It’s very hard to juggle. You’re essentially working full time and dealing with everything that entails but without the payday at the end of the month plus assignments. Placements are shift work and there’s a set amount of nights, weekends etc that have to be completed before you can qualify. I think you need a solid support system and childcare in place. Best thing is to contact local Uni’s to see what you need to apply.

Thank you both. This is all really useful. Currently my plan is to try and get a maternity assistant or support worker role to gain some experience in clinics and hospital settings.
