If you love your can opener, which one us it?

Inspired by another exciting thread, come tell me about your can opener.

I have a shit electric one that takes up too much counter space. It was a present about 15 years ago from someone I'm no longer in touch with. We used to set each other mundane present-buying challenged (e.g. can I have an awesome spoon rest please?). He massively failed on the can opener but I was obliged to love it at the time. I've never got round to replacing it.

Any recommendations and/or overly complex and irrelevant stories about can openers?

This thread is quite old, but if you've landed here looking for advice on what kitchen tools to buy, we've recently updated our best can opener guide with plenty of Mumsnetter-approved products, including both manual and electric options. We hope it's helpful.

We have an Oxo can opener. It's fab. Had it a while now. Still in perfect working order. Good handles to hold and twist. Comfortable. Opens cans easily and quickly. Love it.

amusedtodeath1 · 30/05/2020 23:05

I have an Oxo one too, best one I've ever used. Takes a bit of getting used to, it doesn't cut through the metal so much as it unseals the can, no sharp edges. I've had it a few years now with no problems.

Oxo for me too!

Kohn Rikon. Took me ages to work out where it actually cut but it makes the cut within the top ridge of the can so there's no jagged edges. I love it.

Cheapo JML one, built like a tank, been dropped, thrown & never broken. Had a more expensive one, dropped it once & smashed.

BackforGood · 30/05/2020 23:15

Argos electric one. STILL love it, several years on.

I’ve got a pampered chef one. Not available now but often see bits and bobs on eBay.
I liked it so much that I bought a spare.
It’s lasted 5 years so far. Still looks brand new. Hopefully will keep on doing it’s job as my cheating ex took the spare when he left.

another vote for Oxo. All their gadgets are fab

oneoffname · 30/05/2020 23:26

this is mine. Removes the lid from cans without leaving sharp edges, breaks the vacuum seal on jars so they can be opened sigh ease and removes beer bottle lids. Canespeak highly enough.

Culinare Magican. It is the only one that my left handed husband and my left handed self can both use to reliably open a tin every time. I bought the Oxo one on a recommendation. There is still a piece of it behind the dishwasher when I threw the thing to the floor in a fit of pique during a craving for tinned fruit cocktail. Blush

Mine is a electric one I bought in Tesco for £5 7 years ago. It's great.

EatsFartsAndLeaves · 30/05/2020 23:31

Chunky silver thing with JUDGE written on it. Even opens Fray Bentos pies easily, which any pepper will tell you is the mark of a really good one. I don't actually like Fray Bentos pies but it's nice to know that my tin opener is indestructible.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 30/05/2020 23:36

Oxo good grips here too

Longdistance · 30/05/2020 23:44

Oxo her too. Very robust. I think they’re about a tenner for one. Not bad for something that’s going to last.

MuseumOfYou · 31/05/2020 00:31

Came on specially to say OXO.

My husband had a moment only this week, whilst he was unloading the dishwasher. He held it up and, sincerely, unprovoked and possibly with tears in his eyes, declared 'this is the best tin opener I have had in my entire life.'

He's 56.

purpleme12 · 31/05/2020 01:15

It's brabantia. But I believe it's the same one my mum had for years I think it's the one she gave me.
Every other can opener I got, I couldn't open the cans with properly they'd half do it.
So she gave me that as it always worked

Dinosauraddict · 31/05/2020 01:22

Magican- it's lasted me a decade and is still going.

sueelleker · 31/05/2020 14:09

@purpleme12; I agree with Brabantia; I've had mine for about 40 years. I prefer it to Magican, as it opens right up to grip the edge; I had trouble getting a Magican to grip.
