awww!! You are so lucky to see it.

I only know I have one that visits my garden and eats the cat food I leave out (that the cat didn't eat) due to a poo or two Grin

At work we have 1, that seems to live in the grounds. I see it in the evening and early morning, I work nights in a care home.

Our hedgehog came into the home 1 night, it was hot and we left the conservatory doors open. I had to get some oven gloves and put her outside.

I live hedgehogs. My uncle used to have them visit regularly under his oak tree. A little family of them every year 🦔 ❤️
I once heard a snuffling grunting noise and put my security light on, Mr and Mrs Hog were making babies. My reply was ‘oops! Sorry!’ And left them to it.

I had a hedgehog in our garden earlier this week. I was so excited!
I put some water and a few cat biscuits out and it was making a right racket crunching them Grin

I'm really hoping it will come back but I can't look out of the window all night so I haven't seen it.
I wish I had a camera I could put up.

Ooh! My favourite thread for ages, I love 'em!

They're SO noisy, I don't know how they even hope to not be noticed.

More pictures, please.

I love hedgehogs. Our local rescue on Facebook has been reminding everyone to put out shallow dishes of water for them as it’s so dry at the moment and they are getting poorly hedgehogs that are very dehydrated.

Our dog loves hedgehogs. He catches them very gently and brings them indoors. We only know they are there because he guards them from the other dogs. Then we pick them up like you would a spider - but with a bucket and tea tray instead of glass and paper.

Hedgehogs are on the up, some of it this year is due to less traffic because of lock down but generally people are catering for them better and there's more awareness around slug pellets etc.

I don't think people can under estimate the impact of the badger culls on the hedgehog population across the UK over the last few years either. I know the culls are generally unpopular but they have done wonders for the populations of hedgehogs and ground nesting birds, even if that wasn't their intended consequence.

bluebell94 · 29/05/2020 23:48

Aww I love them! Saw one in our garden a couple of weeks ago, we had quite a few visiting last year Smile found a poorly one on a dog walk last year (think it had been attacked by something) and went back out to get it in a box to feed it and take to a rescue, DH thought I'd lost the plot 🤣

Spot on @Scrowy - the declining hedgehog population is directly linked to the enormous boom in badger numbers. There is nothing a badger likes more than a toothsome morsel like a hedgehog as the hedgehog skins, sans contents, which I keep finding, bear witness to. Unless, as you say, it is ground nesting birds and their eggs or bumblebee nests. All in decline, for a variety of reasons, but Mr Brock is one causal factor for sure. It is an unpalettable truth, won't be admitted by TV naturalists, and nobody wishes to see badgers persecuted, but people do need to be aware that they are voracious, opportunistic predators and not the bumbling, buccolic cuddly creatures they are frequently portrayed as.

But it is a positive move, the growing awareness of hedgehog needs and the fact that people are actively encouraging them, putting out water and the correct food for them ( thank goodness the old 'bread & milk' diet has fallen by the wayside!), and installing hedgehog houses in their gardens. What better than a natural slug and snail deterrent could you have as a gardener?
