DDs spotty skin

DD (12) started her periods 6 months ago and is increasingly becoming spotty. Mostly her forehead and upper back.
I’m trying to keep her hair off her face. And we wipe her face with wipes.
I don’t want to use anything too harsh, but she has got her period this week and it really seems to flare up at this time.
DH and BIL suffered terribly and BILs kids were the same, id like to get some control of it before she goes back to school.
Can anyone recommend something I can get easily (possibly online!)

Mario Badescu drying lotion is really calming down my daughters acne which flares up around the time of her period.

Watching this with interest. Dd is 12 and has the same problem , also on her back and chest . So far we have tried -Paulas choice, ( this Is one with sacylic acid in, the carbon theory soap raves about on fb and. Ow we are in ancecide. This is actually recommended on the nhs website for acne -
Only started it yesterday so can’t comment but the others were
No good for her at all. Think it’s a case of what works for one may not for another I’m afraid. If I can’t get dd to clear this time it’s off to the gp

1busybee · 29/05/2020 22:49

I chatted with the pharmacist and he said try acnecide for a month and if it doesn’t work visit gp as that would be their first guess and you
Can buy it without visiting the gp. It’s really worked for him so might be worth a try

Can I please recommend Acnecide?
It’s a small tube of something magic that reduces spots overnight.

I discovered it in my late 30’s after many years struggling and wish I’d found it sooner.

I also find plenty of time outside in the sunshine really helps

cwtchesandprosecco · 30/05/2020 01:27

Nip and Fab do a teen range which is really good. But yep, as previous posters have said, the pill is often the best fix for hormonal acne. I went on it at 13 or 14, and I think my mum struggled with the idea at the start, but it worked (for a while and then I need something stronger on top, but that’s another story).

nonicknameseemsavailable · 30/05/2020 01:51

I would try charcoal soap, worked for me

Daffy2020 · 30/05/2020 01:53

Wipes won’t help at all. Try dermalogica range quite expensive but lasts ages. Also would recommend duac gel which you can get prescribed from the doc. A bit young however I found the contraceptive pill really helped for me either yasmin or dianette

avamiah · 30/05/2020 02:00

I suffered terribly from about 15 to my late twenties.
My daughter is 10 and I don’t want to think about her getting acne .
😬😬😬😬🤣

avamiah · 30/05/2020 02:03

Sorry back to the post, nothing really worked for me until I had antibiotics and also the pill.

MouseholeCat · 30/05/2020 02:04

Use benzoyl peroxide, 2.5% strength if you can find it but 5% will work. I would avoid 10% as it will cause irritation.

Start with a gentle facewash. Cetaphil works well for me. Use luke warm water and don't scrub the face. Just gentle motions. Pat dry gently with a clean washcloth to avoid irritation.

Then use a non-comedogenic, oil-free moisturiser. Again, put it on gently to avoid irritation. There are lots of options, but one with Licochalcone will help to reduce redness.

Once the moisturiser has absorbed, you put on the benzoyl peroxide. The key is to use it liberally, but work up to the full amount. I use a line the length of my index finger and put it all over my face.

It's important not just to use BP on the spots, which is a mistake lots of people make. It works as a preventative by killing the bacteria that cause acne and increasing skin turnover.

Try to pay attention to the sort of acne she has too. If it's cystic you will have a hard time fighting it without addressing the underlying hormonal drivers (I've learnt the long way...!).

I suffered hugely in my teens and twenties until I discovered Benzyl Peroxide, then known as Topex. It changed my life and bleached much of my bedding, all worth it!

DD has a few spots now, she uses a tree tree wash and freederm and sudocrem at night and that has worked so far. I encourage pillowslip changes as well. She isn't bothered but I'm ready for when she is as my mum didn't care at all how spotty I was.I think it was convenient to keep my spotty, low confident and ugly as my sister was more challenging.

KingSheathBelle · 30/05/2020 02:10

Lots of similar posts of mums who have suffered and worry about our daughters! There is so much help out there now. I had to rely on tv adverts and Jackie magazine Grin

Kb12 · 30/05/2020 02:12

La Roche posay effaclar duo is great for spots

KingSheathBelle · 30/05/2020 02:12

Ditch the wipes, you are just spreading bacteria and dirt

Fluffycloudland77 · 30/05/2020 06:30

@Bagelsandbrie I took roaccutane, life changing. I didn’t start taking it till 41 though 😭

CodenameVillanelle · 30/05/2020 06:38

Where do you get benzoyl peroxide from? I use it on my bum Grin as it's too drying for my face but works on bum spots for me. I usually get it on eBay 3 tubes for £12 but I'm guessing the sellers can't import it at the moment as it's hard to find and expensive. Is there another U.K. outlet I'm missing?

Fluffycloudland77 · 30/05/2020 06:46

Boots sell acnecide.

AnnaFiveTowns · 30/05/2020 07:05

Go to the GP and get some Duac cream; this completely cleared my ds spotty face. Honestly, there's no point faffing about with OTC stuff.

twotimetina · 30/05/2020 07:15

I suffered just as you describe and the only thing that helped at that age was a topical acne cream on prescription from the GP - there were a few different ones and I had to change after 9-12m once my skin stopped responding to one but wow, did they work. I used to use it in conjunction with clearasil on my face and back.

They had some kind of 'bleaching' ingredient that got rid of all the scars and pigmentation (but would also turn my eyebrows ginger if I wasnt careful with application!Grin)

Following this, the pill helped at about 17 and then I used the La Roche Posay range with lots of success. I do agree that a good diet with little sugar, refined carbs etc, plenty of water and a good probiotic would probably do the world of good for your DD's skin though Smile

WinterRose92 · 30/05/2020 07:18

Sudocreme really worked for my skin, just a thin layer of it at nighttime. I’m 28 now and still use it if I get the odd breakout!
