Have you relocated to a new county with kids?

We are relocating to a new county with 4 children. 3 in primary school. The reason is cheaper house prices as I can work anywhere.
Have you done it? Any tips, advice or anything to make me less terrified would be brilliant.

Thank you x

Why are you terrified about relocating to a new county? Surely there are very few differences between them, apart from how much council tax you pay and what the schools are like?

Moving house is really stressful but try not to be terrified by it. Honestly, I've lived in five or six counties over my lifetime and you can't tell one from the other most of the time!

Scared about leaving everything I know and starting again. I feel bad about changing my children’s schools. I think I’m just having a wobble. Thank you for your response

When are you actually moving? Will your children be starting at their new schools in the autumn? I agree it can be daunting to move to a completely different area, but I'm sure your children will soon make friends, and hopefully you will too. Have you looked to see what (in normal times) is going on in the new area? If you have some ideas for places to explore, check out the nearest public library, the park, swimming pool, you might start to feel excited about the move. Good luck with it!

We are moving to Norfolk. That’s great advice about researching places to explore. Thank you x

We’ve moved counties 3 times with kids because of dh’s job - eldest dd is on her fourth primary school!

A lot will come down to the personalities of your children, but mine have always coped well and got on with making new friends. We have always been able to be open with them (in an age appropriate fashion) that the move is going to happen - they all know that we’re not here forever either. So, talk to your kids acknowledge that it’s scary/sad to leave things behind, but emphasise the good stuff - more space, nearer to the beach, more time with you or whatever.

Where about in Norfolk?

It’s a wonderful place to bring up children 🙂

Feel free to message me if you want recommendations etc - I’ve been a resident for 40 years! x

I've just moved 45 miles away, from one edge of the county to the other, so not a different county. I moved here when my children were 4, 10 and 12 - they all moved to new schools and a new school system, ie middle school - year 5 to year 8, then upper. My daughter is moving from that system to two tier. She's excited and said she's fine about it. My older two loved moving and settled in quickly with new friendship groups. Don't worry - schools are good at support children with this, just speak to student support and make sure you stay involved until they're settled. Good luck

We're in Suffolk. Yes Norfolk is a lot cheaper

Thank you, if that’s ok to pm, xx

We are going to do the same! I have one in yr 7, he's my biggest concern as he loves his friends. One is in yr 4 but is very unhappy in school and a 2 yr old.
Dh can work anywhere so we decided we want to be near the coast and somewhere pretty too. We've decided on East riding of yorkshire! House will go up for sale later this year. Exciting and nerve wracking isn't it?
