Painting over paint.. Does it matter what type of paint used? For chair

Had a chair... Think it was originally wood, modern chair though, very smooth, it had been painted by manufacturers, then years ago I applied a paint and I can't remember what it was.

What paint should I go for now, they look grubby..

I was thinking an egg shell wood paint?

Or can any paint do? Eg tester pots..

I’ve used Dulux Made By Me and also Rustoleum Furniture Paint and was very happy with both. A light sand beforehand and no primer needed with either. Rustoleum has small pots which are around £6 I think.

Forgot to say I’ve also used tester pots of Annie Sloan furniture paint but didn’t have the knack to get it looking smooth. Final result was blotchy plus you need to wax it too. But that also doesn’t need a primer and you can get tester pots. Many people use it very successfully. For me Rustoleum had a far a easier consistency to apply.

Thanks for, I messed up my original paint job with chalk paint and it's that matt paint the grim has clung too...

It's blotchy.
I don't like sanding. I'll look at rustoleam and made by me... Thank s

You will only need a very light sanding concentrating on blotchy areas especially .

I recommend Frenchic paint which is specifically intended for furniture. They also do an outdoor paint range called Alfresco. A little goes a long way, it’s self-levelling (so no brushstrokes), and has some fab colours.

The paint can also be used on loads of other items - take a look at the Frenchic Fan Forum on Facebook. Product can be ordered online through their website or through their stockists (who are more likely to have stock at the moment as they have sold out a lot online due to people’s lockdown projects).
