If you live in a hot country, where do you buy clothes to visit a cold country.

If I was to go on holiday somewhere hot I could buy clothes for a hot country or I already have some.
But if you live somewhere hot and are going somewhere cold where do you go for jumpers etc?

(Yes lock down is getting to me)

Grin I think you may have found the only question never asked on Mumsnet

northernlittledonkey · 28/05/2020 20:59

Ooh, what a good question!

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 28/05/2020 21:02

How cold are we talking? You after ski gear or just like normal warmer clothes such as jeans boots and a warmer jumper. Maybe hat, scarf and gloves

Crispsnatcher · 28/05/2020 21:03

The internet?

HairyFloppins · 28/05/2020 21:04

I would say the internet as well.

HerRoyalNotness · 28/05/2020 21:07

Well for some reason stores still
Stock winter clothes here that we don’t need. There are also a couple of outdoor stores where we can get ski stuff from.

Even when I lived in the Middle East stores sold jumpers and coats 🤷🏽‍♀️

InTropicalTrumpsLand · 28/05/2020 21:08

I'm Brazilian. My first "cold place" was Chile in winter, where I experienced circa 0 degree. I bought everything at Decathlon at the skiing section. 6 months later I went to Canada in January... I bought the warmest stuff Decathlon had to offer, and upon arriving was questioned why I was wearing autumn clothes.
Jumpers, etc you can find at normal shops. For example, it's approaching winter here and we had a couple 5°C nights here recently. Additionally, we don't have heating in homes/places, so if it dips to, say, 15 degrees, which isn't unusual in winter, we can't suddenly make everything warmer, so warm clothes is the way to go.

FlamingoAndJohn · 28/05/2020 21:09

Yes the internet now I guess, but I’m old enough to remember life before the internet, so what about then?

Skiing gear is one thing, and I guess you can buy proper cold weather gear from outdoors type shops but what about just for London in December?

Snow/Outdoors Store should have plenty. Any old department store usually have a few coats out of season or for travel abroad - not a huge selection, but something if you're pressed.

HappyHammy · 28/05/2020 21:12

can't you just buy something cheap when you get there as you may not need them again

PicsInRed · 28/05/2020 21:13

London in December?

Snow store covers off hats, gloves, hat scarf, thick socks woolly under layers, warm/waterproof jacket. Prob dont need skis for London in Dec. Maybe Feb, fingers crossed.😂

marcopront · 28/05/2020 21:14

Buy online and get someone to meet you at the airport with the package.
Go to the charity shops when you arrive
Borrow from family

Been there done that

ChaoticCatling · 28/05/2020 21:15

London in December you just need jeans, boots, jumper and coat. Coat from an outdoors shop or department store.

AlphabetDinosaur · 28/05/2020 21:18

I'm in the Middle East and the shops sell jumpers/coats etc still, Decathlon sells ski gear and there's always the internet for anything extra.

AlphabetDinosaur · 28/05/2020 21:19

When we go back to the UK I usually go to Asda and buy some jumpers/trousers for my children in the first day or two of the holiday though so I don't spend loads of money of things they won't wear for more than a couple of weeks a year.

isthismylifenow · 28/05/2020 21:21

I live in a hot country.

But we also have a cool winter so we buy warm clothes then Smile

But, if I was coming to the UK in winter, I would have to buy a decent warm jacket when I got there.

If we came on holiday as kids, whoever fetched us from the airport would bring along extra jackets for us for the trip.

lojoko · 28/05/2020 21:22

I have in the past ordered online and had it posted to my destination. Cheaper than checking luggage.

Rodehereonthebus · 28/05/2020 21:23

Hot countries still have colder seasons - what people consider cold is relative. When I lived in Australia we still had plenty of coats and boots and other winter gear, though comparatively speaking it wasn't that cold.

FlamingoAndJohn · 28/05/2020 21:26

Buying when you get there had not occurred to me!

Big chain shops eg Uniqlo sell pretty much their full range even in hot countries. I once bought a Zara knee length leopard faux fur, and a thick fleece jumper in Singapore.

MrsT1405 · 28/05/2020 21:54

We live in Northern Spain but travel a lot. You only really need 1 big coat and trousers. You can layer a lot and even here you need warmer stuff in winter.
I also hit Tesco or Asda in the uk after driving up before we fly or cruise.
I've done Hawaii and Iceland on the same trip....challenging to say the least.

We went to Spain in August and their Primark was full of the same winter clothes that you’d find in England, including fluffy socks and pyjamas. We were looking for swimming shorts for DS and they only had the last sale bits you’d find in the UK in late summer.

Our Australian friend bought her DD a snowsuit in an outlet store when we were visiting, although I’m not sure why!

Elouera · 28/05/2020 22:04

I used to live in Australia and was freezing for some parts of my 1st visit to the UK- and that was in SUMMER! I've lived here 17yrs now and usually advise people to buy someone once here. Its far cheaper and there is a lot more choice for say winter coats, gloves and hats!

Back in Aus, there are multiple ski shops though, otherwise department stores sell jumpers, coats and warm clothes in season. There are also camping type shops like Kathmandu if you are going really arctic.

I lived in Cyprus for a while. We had a winter... Plus, houses aren't as well insulated, and many didn't have central heating. You could buy thick clothes!
(And Cyprus has a ski resort, so you can buy ski gear! Lidl had the same special buys too)
