Something about them

OP posts:
Katinski · 28/05/2020 11:18

Since I've been in lockdown, I've really become friends with my two crows, who come tapping on the kitchen window reminding me that they're waiting for their breakfastSmile So I tear up a slice of bread (fresh seeded loaf, sliced for me from Morries, I knew you'd be interestedWink ) and throw it out for them. And then the fun begins. As other birds, magpies mostly, fly down, one of the crows chases them off while the other picks up as much as it can carry in its mouth, then they both fly off together to the trees to divvy it up.
So, yes, I LOVE my crowsStar

DC1JackieReid · 28/05/2020 11:51

Love them. So clever. Could you watch some of the experiments done with crows on YouTube OP? Maybe seeing how smart they are will lessen the fear? I do it with spider videos to reduce my fear.

lemontreebird · 28/05/2020 11:53

No, I like them. Clever birds.

bengalcat · 28/05/2020 11:54

I quite like them but on occasion they " crow" at and divebomb my big black dog .

Deathraystare · 29/05/2020 08:39

I like one or two but was walking i a wooded area by the water, stuffing my face as usual. I noticed crows getting nearer and nearer doing that hopping thing they do. Obvs interested in the food. I decided to walk out and did so slowly, so did the crows. Made me think of Hitchcocks ' The Birds'! They may have seen it too!!!

HotCrossBungle · 29/05/2020 08:51

I get what you're saying op. I always feel like they're about to attack me. They are SO big.

Hoohaahoo · 29/05/2020 08:52

I’m the opposite, I’ve always wanted to become friends with one.
They’re so big!

dayswithaY · 29/05/2020 08:56

They are so clever. They remember human faces and pass that information onto over crows, so don't upset a crow!

TheoriginalLEM · 29/05/2020 09:01

I am scared of crows and magpies because they feel like a bad omen. However i work with animals and will happily handle birds of prey and they can potentially do a lot of damage. Gulls are vicious and bite and twist with their beaks Grin crows and magpies? I'll handle if i absolutely have to but they get passed on to someone else! It's all silly superstition and imagery from books but i have anxiety and they are a trigger.

Chungus · 29/05/2020 09:02

I doubt it.

TheoriginalLEM · 29/05/2020 09:03

@dayswithaY that has properly freaked me out!!

Giggorata · 29/05/2020 09:55

Love them. They are intelligent, can use tools and also play. There are several clips on YouTube, one of which is a few crows sliding down a snowy roof, just for fun.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 29/05/2020 10:04

No, like PPs, I love them, I'm quite friendly with the jackdaws currently nesting in the eaves.

Apparently corvids remember people who are cruel to them and pass the warning to other birds, you'll be marked for life if you're nasty to a crow!

BeingonFBdoesntmakeittrue · 29/05/2020 10:10

2 years ago I was woken in the early morning by tapping at my kitchen window. As I live on the 3rd floor I was shitting myself as I crept along the corridor to the kitchen. It was a fucking crow! As soon as I popped my head round the door it went mad, banging at the window with its beak and squawking and flapping.

Looking it up on Google it was likely to be something to do with nesting and or/reflections on the window but it was really disconcerting! It happened two days later and then one week after that then never again. Those times I didn't go to the kitchen and just left them to it.

I ignored all the stuff on Google about them being a harbinger of death and can confirm no-one died!

JessicaDay · 29/05/2020 10:22

There are hundreds and hundreds of them in the woods at the back of the village.

Sometimes in the early morning they fly about in a huge swirling murder. It’s spooky in a Hitchcock kinda way. Very cinematic looking.

DGRossetti · 29/05/2020 10:59

Maybe this will help ?

Doingtheboxerbeat · 29/05/2020 11:08

@DC1JackieReid, I don't think I ever want to know how smart spiders are 😳.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 29/05/2020 11:19

We’ve got ourselves a Lockdown Crow (Covid Corvid) too! He’s made a huge nest at the top of one of the poplars and comes down regularly tapping on a glass lantern I have outside the kitchen doors. My daughter goes to the door with his little bowl full of whatever he’s getting that day (mince is his favourite). He step/hops back a bit while she puts it down and watches while he eats it. Have only seen him though, no female in the nest it seems.

CharmerLlama · 29/05/2020 11:32

Nope, I like crows. There's a friendly one over the park where I walk my dog. It's brave enough to come within a few feet of me (seems to know my dog won't chase it) and I take it over some bread. He caws at me afterwards as though he's saying thank you.

I also have a pair that visit my garden. This was them in March after I'd given my dog a good brush with the Furminator brush. They came and grabbed the fur to line their nests with.

When I removed an accumulation of DWs hair from the beater on our hoover I thought I'd leave it in patches on the lawn for our magpies. Who proceeded to ignore them for weeks until I cut the grass.

Picky buggers !

Lardlizard · 02/06/2020 00:28

I’ve just seen these videos, actually freaked me out more, the fact the are so clever scares me more!!

Now cows, they are bad.

Crows though.... ace!

Tolleshunt · 02/06/2020 01:05

Another crow lover here. They’re amazingly clever. I feed some sometimes at a nearby green space, and they seem to recognise me now. To begin with they seemed astonished that a human would willingly give them food, which I found a little sad.
