Need some advice re burns

Hi everyone.

Hope this is the right place to post!

I stupidly gave myself a steam burn on my hand on Monday morning. Blister formed pretty quickly and I’ve been leaving it alone to heal ever since. However, I’ve just accidentally popped the blister and it’s red raw underneath. All advice is to not pop the blister but I’m not sure what to do now it has popped Confused. Any advice on what to from here? Am I pretty much guaranteed to get a horrible infection?

I think that needs medical attention, can you easily see a pharmacist or phone your GP?

How big was the burn/is the red skin?

cwtchesandprosecco · 28/05/2020 11:09

Thanks both. It’s probably about 2 inches big. It feels tight and stings a bit but not agony. I’ve been putting antiseptic cream on it.

If you think it needs dressing I would advice a minor injury unit rather than GP. They will have better access to correct dressings- GP can prescribe them but pharmacy might not necessary have them. Advice is if on the hand and blisters then AE or minor injuries not GP.

antiseptic cream from the back of the first aid kit is asking for an infection.

contact your local minor injuries (you may need to book) and get it seen there.

They say any burn on a hand that blisters needs to be seen by a HCP. Please get it checked out.

burns on fingers or hands need to be seen. please go to the walk in center or see your gp x

Stop putting cream on it. Get some sterile dressings and maybe see a pharmacist first.

I would not put amy cream on. Keep it dry and covered.
It is possible to get special burns dressings from the chemist, they are quite large and made especially for burns.
If not, a dry bandage.

Any burn bigger than a 50p piece, one that straddles a joint or is in an area with complex movements eg. the hand should be assessed by a doctor

User0ne · 28/05/2020 22:12

You should probably get it seen.

If you're like me though and wouldn't until it's falling off then you should clean it with sterile water (boiled is usually good enough), put a lint free pad on top and bandage it up in a way which reduces movement.

Any sign of infection (redness, swelling, temperature etc) and you need medical attention pronto.
