Dualit or Smeg? Help!

So.. my Russell Hobbs toaster has finally given up the ghost. It wasn't that great anyway - would burn one side of the toast and was generally just a bit crap.

I'm looking for a toaster that's actually going to last and does the job. Struggling to decide on which one I want to get. I quite like the black Smeg one but have heard Dualit are quite long lasting. I can't decide!

Can anyone give recommendations?

Our dualit toaster is nearly 16yrs old and still looks decent. The filament is just starting to go, so the bread only toasts on one side. You can buy new filaments so will probably get round to doing that. Out matching dualit kettle however is no 3 - buy from John Lewis as their returns are fantastic (we did this with the 1st as it had a fault early on.) 2nd lasted about 10yrs though.

not tried Smeg but love my Dualit, had for at least 5 yrs, think my mum has had hers at least 10.

I was quickly scrolling down thread titles and through this was about choosing baby names...... it's not Grin

gchalix · 27/05/2020 19:19

@MadauntofA @bogfi Do you both have the classic Dualit?

My Dualit has just broken for about the fifth time in maybe 11 years, and we can't be arsed replacing bits yet again, so we're getting a cheap toaster. The Dualit replacement filaments cost about twice as much as the toaster I've bought.

They both look like great quality but not sure I would want the word SMEG in my face everyone I went to the kitchen.
So dualit.

TheWashingFairyatemyhamster · 27/05/2020 19:47

Our second Smeg has just broken. It was a replacement for the first one and has broken in exactly the same way so wouldn’t recommend. It also took up a lot of space for no real reason.

I have had my dualities for years. It’s the only toaster I know that can easily be repaired. The classic type one not the cheaper new type one. Not that I’ve ever had to have it repaired.

user1498572889 · 27/05/2020 19:49

Dualit. 😁

MuthaClucker · 27/05/2020 19:51

Having had a Smeg oven, I’d say Dualit.

Florabritannica · 27/05/2020 19:55

Bought my Dualit in 2002 after a lot of ‘can I justify it?’ heart-searching. Still going strong.

TheHighestSardine · 27/05/2020 19:55

Our Russell Hobbs twin has been going for twelve years now, but naturally it's a model you can't get any more.

It's all very luck of the draw with these things - although I do suspect Lobster has iffy electrics, maybe too high a voltage! Five pops in 11 years seems way above average.

Watto1 · 27/05/2020 19:58

I used to be a nurse. The ward kitchens all had Dualit toasters that were used day in, day out and never broke down. So I treated myself to one 6 years ago and it’s been brilliant!

ColaPip · 27/05/2020 20:02

Ooh good question. I've had a Classic Dualit for over 10yrs and have always been happy with it. Started toasting unevenly a couple of years ago but Dualit repaired it and fine again. I've used a Smeg one a few times at my parents and really liked it - to the point that I'd probably get one if our Dualit broke again.
Don't know what model the Smeg one is but it's got 2 large (full length) slots, all silver and dial/knob at end. I realise I've just described pretty much every toaster ever made!
Anyway, like it a lot - it's sleeker and less clunky than Dualit and works really well.

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 27/05/2020 20:17

Bought my Dualit toaster in 1996 and last week one element failed. Bought a complete set (4) of replacements for £37 but to buy the same toaster today would cost £183. Still think it's great AND it's made in the UK. I bought it because I had noticed they seemed to be used in cafés and pubs and previous toasters didn't seem to last more than a couple of years - and didn't take a normal slice of bread.

samandpoppysmummy · 27/05/2020 20:21

I've had my Dualit toaster for 15 years and it's still working perfectly. I've also got a Smeg fridge freezer which I bought in 2002 - it's moved house with me 5 times and still going! So Smeg products are well made too.

lojoko · 27/05/2020 20:21

I have the Dualit Domus (cheaper version) and it's great! It's so great! I didn't realise that toasters could have such greatness. I was previously languishing in the hellworld of random toasters I bought for £19.99 whenever my last one died and had no conception of the toast I could have been eating. Grin I mean it!

Not had to repair it yet as it's not very old so no idea there.

I'm in the US I don't think my voltage is too high Grin

TheHighestSardine · 27/05/2020 23:45

Haha! Probably not, I'm surprised toasters work at all over there :)
