Fell into stinging nettles !

So on a walk today, I fell into a large clump of stinging nettles.
We were on a footpath in the middle of nowhere so it was a good hour or so before we got back to the car.
Came home and put my arm in cold water as I seem to have a rather violent reaction to them . I've also taken antihistamine tablet , had a cool shower and put on hydrocortisone cream ( I googled it and all of them were suggested ! )
The reaction has gone down now but it's still burning and stings like hell ! Any other suggestions ?

Definitely dock leaves there would have been some growing next to the nettles.

Bumble84 · 27/05/2020 17:46

Yeah dock leaves but you’ll need to go out looking for more nettles as they normally grow side by side

goose1964 · 27/05/2020 17:47

In was pushed into a patch when I was a kid, dad spent hours rubbing me with dock leaves. It was the only thing that gave me relief.50 years later I still react badly to them .You have my sympathy.Flowers

Yes picked dock leaves , I crushed them and used them but sadly didn't work very well. I was picking them every time I saw some 😢

Dock leaves and nettles...... this was something every child used to know; even city-dwellers like me.

Spillinteas · 27/05/2020 17:57

Ouch!! Poor you 😬😬

StopGo · 27/05/2020 18:02

If you've got a frozen picnic block or similar in the freezer use that. Wrap it in a tea towel so you don't 'burn' your skin. Failing that frozen peas would help.

Gilead · 27/05/2020 18:09

Porridge if you have it, bung in tea towel, rinse towel, wring and then dab on stings.

Vamoosh · 27/05/2020 18:13

A paste of baking soda and water to neutralise the acid.

AdaColeman · 27/05/2020 18:16

Oh you poor thing, that must be so uncomfortable, hope you start to feel better soon.
Witch hazel lotion or cream might help you.

JimandWilson · 27/05/2020 18:16

Burn gel is amazing for relieving nettle sting pain

WelcomeToGreenvale · 27/05/2020 18:23

They're acidic, try something alkaline like a bit of baking soda mixed with water

JuneJuly · 27/05/2020 18:27

Aloe Vera gel? Not sure but it may have a relieving effect, as with sunburn.

MattBerrysHair · 27/05/2020 18:32

Pretty sure the dock leaves thing is a myth, told to small children so as to distract them from the pain....

You've done everything you can OP, you just need to wait it out now. You have my deepest sympathies.

Coldhandscoldheart · 27/05/2020 18:33

Also take a painkiller.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 27/05/2020 18:34

Dock leaves are not a myth, it does work, but you’d need a load if you fell in.

Witchend · 27/05/2020 18:35

How bad is the rash?

There's no chance you also brushed giant hogweed is there? It's often growing near rivers/canals where you might find nettles.
Just it does sound like a particularly bad reaction.

Soubriquet · 27/05/2020 18:37

I actually fell into some nettles about 6 months ago

Stung all one side of my face and hand and one of my eyes kept spasming

Antihistamine and bath and it was completely gone within 24 hours

Horehound · 27/05/2020 18:38

@MattBerrysHair it's not a myth. Sounds like you haven't even tried it so what do you know?

Wanderer1 · 27/05/2020 18:39

People used to claim dock leaves helped neutralise the acid of the sting but it's not true because dock sap is acid too. Application is total placebo coupled with the slightly soothing effect of putting something cool on the stings. Definitely stick with remedies from inside your house

VictoriaBun · 27/05/2020 18:39

Yes I crushed dock leaves and used them ( a few times ) 😢
