Would you book a UK holiday cottage for July?

We've cancelled our France trip but means DH has two weeks off work in July and we would like to do something. I saw the cottage websites are taking bookings for July 4 onwards.

Would you? Grin

Same with us; we've booked a glamping tent on the basis that we get a full refund if we don't go. We'll bring our shopping and just be isolated somewhere with a different view!

I would personally feel uncomfortable travelling across the border into England to get around Scotland's lockdown restrictions if the situation is still the same in the summer. It doesn't seem wise or fair, especially when travel isn't allowed into Scotland or around Scotland.

The local councils, police, National Parks, farming unions and so on are asking visitors to ignore Boris and stay away from the Lake District, Peak District and North Yorkshire. I can't see that changing by July, OP. The north east hasn't been very happy to have its 3 visitors from London to Durham and Barnard Castle recently, either...

WutheringTights · 27/05/2020 16:31

I wouldn't. We're supposed to be away now. Owner is refusing a refund, just letting us rebook for same time next year if we pay a 30% surcharge but unwilling to pay them any more money as suspect they'll be bankrupt by then. I'd wait and try to get something last minute if restrictions are lifted.

Yes I meant if I was in England I’d be more likely to risk going a holiday around England as you are allowed to travel in a car more than 5 miles now - not travel from Scotland to England. It’s clear that phase 1 in Scotland doesn’t let you go anywhere more than 5 miles away and seems highly unlikely to allow tourism, although it could change quickly but seems unlikely.

flamegame · 27/05/2020 16:35

I can’t see how Scotland can allow tourism whilst not allowing residents to go anywhere other than a 5 mile radius.

ilovepuggies · 27/05/2020 16:47

It’s a personal choice. I’ve decided to cancel our family holiday to the new forest this year and stay at home and not go too far.

missequine · 27/05/2020 17:40

I am considering it and would definitely be comfortable with it, tbh I would even go right now if I could! Only problem is lockdown measures not being reduced eg restaurants, pubs not being open would really be a downer so would hold off until I knew exactly what was happening re: these.

Westiegirl3 · 28/05/2020 11:34

I'm considering booking a week in the Lake District from 4th July.
I've been working from home for the past 9 weeks and have the week already booked as annual leave from work.
I have the same week off as holiday every year, my original holiday was cancelled weeks ago but I'm desperate to get away for a change of scenery now.

EveryoneLoves09876 · 28/05/2020 11:36

Unless there's a 100% cancellation refund... no!

ilovepuggies · 28/05/2020 13:03

I’ve just read an article on the guardian by a science professor saying everyone should plan to stay close to home for as long as possible to stop the spread and risking low infection rate areas.

HairyToity · 02/06/2020 13:40

I'm in similar predicament, except we've paid a deposit in January. We need to decide what we're doing by Friday. I'd like to go, and sell isolate with change of scenery. DH thinks stressful and would rather stay at home. DH is vulnerable.

GinnyStrupac · 03/06/2020 14:31

The infection figures for the North of England in particular are not looking good. After a frankly awful time thanks to visitors since Boris allowed unlimited recreational travel in England - huge crowds, lack of social distancing, litter, fires from barbecues and smoking on tinder dry woodland and moorland, speeding, outdoor toileting, abuse of council workers, police and residents, overwhelming village shops, overnight stays, call outs to emergency services and volunteers caused by risky or downright stupid behaviour, constant heavy traffic and inconsiderate or dangerous parking - visitors are really not welcome in National Parks, coastal areas and beauty spots right now like the Yorkshire Dales, Moors and Coast, Lake District and Cumbria and the Peak District. There's a huge call, not just from Devon, for a 5 mile limit on travel for recreation. Scotland has got this guidance right. It needs to be added to the law, otherwise the police will have an impossible task with the sort of covidiots we are seeing. If Boris continues to ignore the burden now being endured by these communities in England and throws caution to the wind some more for 'populism' to allow holidays in the coming months, I can't see holidaymakers will be welcome, not forgetting the risk of viral spread in both directions

GinnyStrupac · 03/06/2020 16:56

Should read Dorset because of what has been happening at Durdle Door, not Devon, although of course Devon and Cornwall are also experiencing serious problems with visitors.
