How can I get off the sugar and how bad will it be?

It's really, really bad. I'm eating SO MUCH sugar, I've got into a really silly place with it.

Almost a whole packet of fudge this evening, and half a packet of biscuits. And DH bought me a small packet of peanut butter cups earlier. Blush I wasn't like this at all before I had ds.

How have you got off the sugar, and was it terrible? I think I'm just knackered and go 'I need a boost, I'll go get some rubbish' - it's like a physical 'hit' of good feelings. Bah.

For me cold Turkey and keep busy. The first few days are really hard but by 7-10 days you genuinely don't want it anymore, in fact cheap sugary chocolate etc starts seeming repulsive.

I know all the arguments about natural sugars being just as bad but I genuinely don't get the sugar slump or the bad skin that goes with too much refined sugar or processed carbs.

guzzling honey, maple syrup etc means just as many calories. Eat some fruit FFS. No food is bad. Too much food makes you fat.

and don't buy any diet books, they are ALL total horseshit. Free advice on the NHS site, although there's no money to be made in 'eat less and move around a bit' which is why it isn't heavily peddled.

I'm watching this with interest- I have absolutely no self control and have realised I'm absolutely addicted to sugar. Chocolate, cake, biscuits, popcorn, hot chocolate... I'll always find a way to get a fix- I've been known to hide stuff too.

Seriously starting to think about going completely cold turkey but honestly I'm a bit scared of how bad I'll feel as I eat so much. I've got an allotment and love growing healthy, organic produce for my family but I'm massively overweight and it's clear I'm a binge eating, sugar addicted fatty.

'Guzzling', really? Hmm could we avoid the loaded language please?

Let's just keep it a nice supportive thread. Peace and love and all that.

@HopeClearwater I had a hysterectomy at 42 so I'm passed that I think?! (hard to tell without periods!!)
I'm trying to cut down from today. I know it will be hard so baby steps.
I've only had a freddo and 4 plain biscuits, believe me when I say that's amazing for me!!! Grin

allfalldown47 · 28/05/2020 16:39

@Eckhart that is a sobering thought. I know I need to control it, I really do!

allfalldown47 · 28/05/2020 16:40

@pandarific here here to a supportive thread. Good luck with trying to cut out the (oh so lovely!) sweet stuff Wink

@allfalldown47 I don't want to second guess your GP but it sounds odd to say that your risk of diabetes is practically nil; I would have thought them more likely to say that your blood sugar levels are fine currently and with no excess weight, you are not at a great risk of diabetes, but a high sugar diet may put you at a higher risk as time goes by. Apologies if I'm wrong on that!

Noideaatall2020 · 28/05/2020 20:20

I was a sugar addict after having my daughter. It's been a nightmare. One day I decided that was it, I'm not doing it anymore and it wasn't as hard as I expected. The first 3 days were hard, but it got easier. Have a read of the blood sugar diet, it's really interesting book and gives some recipes and eating plans in the back

allfalldown47 · 28/05/2020 21:51

@9caratyellowgold I'm guessing it was based on my weight? I was weighed, bloods taken, blood pressure etc It was pretty thorough!!

CaffeineInfusion · 29/05/2020 00:05

The word Diet was banned in my house growing up. We were all healthy and no one was overweight. But when I went through a teen fad of wanting to be thinner, my mum simply bought a bottle of PLJ. Worked wonders for taking away any longing for sweet food.

No idea if it is still around. But these days, if I want to cut out the crap in my diet I drink cold water with a slice of lemon. My fridge is full of lemons😂 Takes away cravings... Still need to shift some weight though😉

9caratyellowgold · 29/05/2020 09:36

@allfalldown47 Probably your weight and your bloods. I come from a family with a history of type 2 diabetes, invariably in people who have no excess weight, gaunt being an apt description for most of them, so I don't think being a healthy weight is a guarantee against diabetes, although it's a big help of course Smile

allfalldown47 · 29/05/2020 09:48

@9caratyellowgold dh is type 1, so I know first hand how crappy diabetes is Sad
I'm going to try but I have such bad habits. My meals are very healthy but I'm a terrible snacker and that's my downfall!!

Eckhart · 29/05/2020 09:51

@CaffeineInfusion I've used a slice of something pickled to do the same job, it must be to do with acid, then. I'd never seen this method advertised for taking sweet cravings away, but it's like magic. I wonder why nobody's marketing it??
