Want to get him a few bits with some money his Grandparents sent for him. Lockdown has resulted in lots of tablet time but need some ideas :)

This thread is quite old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for toy or gift ideas for three-year-olds, we’ve recently updated our best toys for 3-year-olds page with lots of great options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users and their kids. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

How does a 3 year old have tablet time...?

Anyway my 3 year old plays with Lego, Duplo, cars, animals, drawing, teddies, dressing up. Playing outside with buckets and spades and making mud pies.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 26/05/2020 16:33

@Microwaveoven by playing the age appropriate games and apps we downloaded for him. Its not ideal but we are both working full time so needs must...

Thats pretty much the same as what our son has, I'm really struggling to find something to buy but my parents will be upset if I dont as its their way of connecting at the moment.

My OP should read 'lockdown has resulted in lots of tablet time, so need some ideas' I think the current situation is sapping all our creativity and I'm looking for ideas to mix things up.

What about a moving animal? Not sure how to describe it. Like a fluffy bunny that does somersaults! Or a train track. Sand pit? What's the budget I guess?

caffeinebuzz · 26/05/2020 16:40

DD got some magnatiles for her birthday a month ago and has played with them every day since. The paddling pool has also had plenty of use - we turn it into a ball pit on the days when it's not quite hot enough for water.

Microwaveoven · 26/05/2020 16:43

Oh yes, paddling pool/ball pool. Play tent.

helia · 26/05/2020 16:46

Ignore the unhelpful comments about screen time. We are both WFH FT and we use the Cbeebies app or similar when we need to. More often than not we don't need it but if DH is on a call and I need to get something done at the same time then it works a treat.

Anyway, the things DS (closer to 4 than 3) likes are:
Lego
Sticker books
Riding his scooter
Riding his bike
His children's encyclopaedia and a dinosaur "dictionary"
Painting (I find watercolour paints easiest to deal with), colouring and Play Doh

To be honest, it is about 90% Lego at the moment though!

Good ones for DDalmost3 at the moment are Happyland (great for pretend play- expensive new but you can pick up some good sets on eBay for a steal), Duplo and facepaints - we use the pen ones from John Lewis which don't need water and come off easily with a water wipe.

qate · 26/05/2020 16:53

I've also been collecting toilet paper kitchen/rolls as they're great for a quick craft activity - making binoculars etc.

Minai · 26/05/2020 16:53

DS1 has just turned 3 and his current favourites are

His play tent
Duplo
Magnetic tiles
Go jetters vroomster
Brio train set
Balance bike

And like yours he has some time on a tablet every now and then with CBeebies apps on it. I don’t think there is anything wrong with that at all and he has learnt lots from numberblocks and alphablocks!

Duckchick · 26/05/2020 16:54

What sort of stuff is he into? My older two are 3 and 5, as a PP says magnatiles are popular. Brio is good too but it is expensive. You can get Crayola 'magic' mess free colouring which entertains them for a bit. My 3 year old also likes aquadoodle and as it's painting with water is something that doesn't require much supervision. Playdoh can also be good, it's really easy to make your own (Google imagination tree no cook recipe) and you can get some tools quite cheaply - if he's into dinosaurs or diggers you can set up a little world for them.

My 3 year old also likes some simpler games, like monkey business, and cooperative games like Hana's My First Orchard (cooperative games are great with this age as you don't have the issue of them loosing / it mattering when they decide they want to swap game pieces with you).

qate · 26/05/2020 16:55

*DSalmost3...

Also, have you seen My Busy Books? They come in a huge range related to TV/movie - short book with 12 characters and a playmat. DS loves acting out the stories himself with them, or coming up with other adventures (also v portable for when lockdown relaxes).

MsChatterbox · 26/05/2020 16:56

My son loves playmags and duplo. Loves puzzles. Also his playhouse outside with a little kitchen in it! Balls as well!

DaisyChainsForever · 26/05/2020 16:56

Dinosaurs! Can't get enough of them. He also has a wheelbarrow for the garden which he puts everything in!

Sjl479 · 26/05/2020 16:58

Whirli.com toy hire has been a lifesaver for us during lockdown, and means if something’s not a hit or they get bored if it you can send it back! We swap every week at the moment.

user3274826 · 26/05/2020 16:59

Oh do fuck off Microwave. Tablet time isn't crack.

OP, my DS3 plays with his cars all day long. Cars in water, cars in sand, cars in playdough, with a toy garage, cars in paint, wrapping cars up in paper, hide and seek the cars in the garden etc etc. The Disney Cars branded ones are overwhelmingly more popular with him, even before he was interested in the movies. I think the faces and the quality of them appealed. If you have a car fan, I'd recommend splashing out on some of the Disney ones. B&M, Smyth's, Asda and the Disney shop tend to sell them. We've also had huge success with Hot Wheels colour change cars, he has spent hours and hours with them with bowls of warm and iced water.

He also spends a lot of time playing with play dough. We have a few sets, my 3 year old has the fire truck, I wasn't sure it would have much play value over regular cutters and rolling pins but is played with nearly every day. The popcorn and burger set have also been popular. I'm a total convert to the gimmicky sets now.

Other favourite toys here are wooden train track, Duplo train track (more popular than the wooden), and a Carrera scalextric thing. The Carrera track brings him so much joy, but is a pain in the sense to set up and needs adult supervision, so not ideal for getting things done while they are occupied. We have Way to Play rubber road too, which is mostly played with in the garden.

Orchard toys games and puzzles are always a hit too. A marble run, we have a wooden one and a Galt one. The Galt one is probably used more. Magnetic tiles, Mr Potato head is popular, but you need a bundle to get the most play value rather than just one potato. A doll, my son has a tiny treasures mini doll he is quite taken with.

VeraorHolly · 26/05/2020 17:00

My 3 year old is also enjoying the tablet, and I don't mind at all because I also spend 10 hours a day talking with her. She likes the montessori app. It is pricey, but fantastic and it goes on forever.

She would be delighted with fuzz if we made a story about the fuzz. She mostly wants to talk. The best thing we have bought recently is a spray bottle, and she sprays the plants in the garden (I have to voice the plants, thanking her for the water, but I still get to get in a spot of gardening)

We spend an hour a day on the balance bike (I have to be the voice of the bike, river, path, flowers).

Playdoh is great, as are snakes and ladders (Frozen version here) and dressing up clothes..

I have spent a small fortune on child friendly chapter books that I download to the kindle and read her.

Wooden train set (he is Thomas tank mad)
Play kitchen

Melissa and doug do some great bits, latch board and doorbell house are loved.

Imtoooldforallthis · 26/05/2020 17:04

Could you fit one of these in your garden, just bought for my grandsons as you can set it low so they can get on and off themselves and higher it when they get bigger, helps if you have a couple of trees to hang it from.

DD turned 3 in January. Her favourites are duplo, play doh, train set and a supermarket with food, till etc

CoodleMoodle · 26/05/2020 17:07

At 3 DD liked her Peppa figures, train track, Play Doh, play kitchen and food, any sort of painting or colouring... Her main love was/is books though. She loved playing libraries. Imagination games were her thing at that age!

fedupandlookingforchange · 26/05/2020 17:07

Brio train set or equivilant such as big jigs
Toy farm with lots of machinery
Sand pit.
Water tray, its a large tray about 3 inches deep that I fill with water and a few rocks, its either dinosaur land or vehicles drive up and down.
There are some great ideas on pinterest.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 26/05/2020 17:14

@Imtoooldforallthis no but something for the garden is a cracking idea thanks! We have a tuff tray for water but a slide could be good.

Also thanks everyone suggesting magnetiles they look ace.

Hes into dinosaurs, not so much cars, just starting to get into imaganitive play. The happy land stuff looks fun but yes those prices are a shock!

Oh he also likes looking after his teddies, putting them to bed, checking them out with drs kit etc.

He has lots of toys! I would normaly say 'oh thats kind of you mum, we will use the money to take him to the zoo' or such but at the moment we can't.
