Does anyone speak/read (possibly) German?

We moved into our house 4 years ago and we discovered this old spice rack tucked behind the toilet in the outside toilet. We just left it in there as we had more important stuff to do. Anyway, today I decided to dig it out and clean it up. It turns out the jars appear to be German? I think it's fairly obvious what's in them, table salt, pizza flavouring, curry powder, cayenne pepper, marjoram and basil(?) I'm just curious what the rest of the writing is on them, if anyone can help please?

Marjoram
Table salt
Cayenne Pepper
Pizza Seasoning

Ormally · 26/05/2020 14:52

Yes, it's German, the other text tells you the composition if necessary (eg in the case of pizza herbs) and serving suggestions/recipes that would need them. Will see what I can give you from the close-ups.

Destroyedpeople · 26/05/2020 14:53

Why don't you use Google translate ?

The first one says 'marjoram' for potato soup, ragouts omelets and fish dishes. And whatever leberknodel is I canot recall.

It's not v hard to understand them surely

EBearhug · 26/05/2020 14:54

Google translate would probably work for that, too. (Wouldn't trust it with anything more complex.)

Noflora · 26/05/2020 14:55

The cayenne says it is a particularly spcy seasoning for fish recipes, soup and sauces, salads and rice dishes.

The pizza spice preparation contains oregano, pepper, coriander, lovage and milksugar

EBearhug · 26/05/2020 14:55

Leberknoedel is a sort of liver dumpling.

DomsMumClassic · 26/05/2020 14:56

They're recommendations for dishes the herbs can be used in, e.g. Kohl=cabbage, Weiss bohnen=white beans (presumably haricots or cannelini beans), karroffelsuppen=potato soup.

Google translate is your friend here. Download the app, and it will translate pictures for you.

DomsMumClassic · 26/05/2020 14:57

Don't use them! They'll be stale and horrible by now.

Ormally · 26/05/2020 14:59

The other thing you may have wondered is that 'Mindestens Haltbar bis...' means 'Best before' (and the dates are 1991 and 1990!)

The most interesting bits of the text are:
for use in potato soups, ragouts, omelettes, fish sauces (marjoram);
derived from rock salt (table salt);
particularly piquant/spicy seasoning for fish dishes, soups, sauces, rice dishes (cayenne);
and the components of the curry powder (usual stuff but plus lemon flowers or potentially a lemony herb)

Noflora · 26/05/2020 15:01

Basil for oxtailsoup, pies, omelettes, white beans, cabbage

Curry spice mix, coriander, turmeric,chilli, bayleaf, fenugreek, mustard seed, cornstarch, lemonblossom, garlic, salt

SoupDragon · 26/05/2020 15:04

Don't use them! They'll be stale and horrible by now.

And were stored behind a toilet 😂

Destroyedpeople · 26/05/2020 15:05

Cool jars though.

Noflora · 26/05/2020 15:07

Marjoram for potato soup, ragouts, omelettes, fishsauces, roasts, liverdumplings.

Tablesalt produced from Rocksalt for cooking and seasoning

Noflora · 26/05/2020 15:09

I thought the uses for basil particularly old fashioned!

BobbinThreadbare123 · 26/05/2020 15:11

Who doesn't love knoblauch though! I love the German words for foodstuffs.

Knoblauch is garlic BTW.

Ormally · 26/05/2020 15:15

It's vanilla sugar I miss. The real deal circa 1999 when I was living in Austria and when there was more vanilla about.

I know you can get sachets or infuse a jar, but it's not quite right.

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 26/05/2020 15:15

That's so interesting, thanks all! I'm not going to use them Grin I might empty and refill them though once I've waxed the rack and got it looking its best again.

Google translate also has a text recognition function, where you take a photo and it scans the text and translates it!

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 26/05/2020 16:55

Vanillezucker wouldn't be in a spice rack, but with the baking supplies. Together with Backpulver, Hefe, Backaromen. (I now want to bake sth.)

Mindestens haltbar: = keeps at least until (but can probably be used loger): but in your case better not
