Donating clothes and shoes in charity boxes

The clothes boxes you find in places like supermarket car parks, what are they for? I remember someone saying that they don't actually re-use the clothes but the fabric and anything like zips, buttons, etc. Is that true?

I've read the instructions on my local one and it just says stuff must be clean and in a sealed bag. Also they are not accepting donations at the moment.

I have some old bedsheets (worn but clean and certainly usable, I'd keep them if I had the space or give them to someone else but I really can't be bothered with the hassle). Can I put them in?

Also I have some clothes but they have holes in, can they go in or am I taking the piss and wasting the charity's time?

We do not have charity shops here.

The nice stuff is sold. (Obviously this makes the most money for the charity).
The tatty bits are recycled as rags and seat stuffing. Very little is wasted.

Local tips also recycle tatty clothing. I tend to send my old stuff there and keep the nice bits for charity.

Thanks megletthesecond. I will put the stuff in there when they start opening for collection again.
