Help. What do you do with a turnip?

DH got flustered in the veg aisle and came home with a turnip.

What happens next? How do we turn it into something edible. Or shall I just use it to bash him on the head.

Ideas, anyone, please?

It’s just a swede in another guise. Peel it, cut it into chunks , boil or steam it then mash with pepper (& maybe butter)
It’s like a watery potato

Do you mean a Swede or the smaller purple and white turnip?

Dreamersandwishers · 25/05/2020 19:20

Oh, or add it to soup.

Thighdentitycrisis · 25/05/2020 19:20

I’ve only ever put it in a stew

Make it into a lantern.

My brother follows a mad ketogenic diet, which means potatoes are out but turnips are ok. I peeled it, cut it into a fairly small dice and then sautéed it in a stupid amount of butter with plenty of salt and pepper. Basically confit turnip. I kept the heat pretty low so it didn't burn or crisp up.

We were amazed. Turnip. Delicious.

It’s actually a turnip. Purply thing. I loathe swede (memories of 1980s school food) which doesn’t help this situation.

He meant to buy a celeriac but felt hassled to move out of his two metre space, and made a poor choice under pressure.

Sell it when Timmy and Tommy are offering the most Bells. But don’t let it rot.

What would I do with a turnip? I would pop it in the bin, and order pizza. Unless you happen to live next door to some ravenous pigs and the owner is fine with you lobbing your unwanted vegetables over the fence Grin

Jesus. Google BBC Good Food and turnip recipes. It's not tricky.

It’s so nice pickled, it goes lovely with grilled meat that way and it only takes 5 days.

I find them really hard to peel and chop so I'd put it in the microwave for 10 mins, check, then another 2 mins check etc until it's soft. Then mash with butter salt and pepper, lovely!
