Cost of food rising?

Is anyone else's weekly food shop up by ££?

My Lidl shop just cost me £15-20 more than it normally would. Iceland was around £10 more even though I bought less than I normally would, albeit things that were slightly more expensive as the budget things we usually get were out of stock.

The food bank trolley was worryingly empty too. It's usually quite full.

I’m not sure it’s rising - but there are less offers!

Things like Pringles and Kettle chips are always on offer - and I haven’t seen them once deducted since lock down.

Just one silly example.

Frequency · 25/05/2020 18:21

Pringles are on offer in Iceland atm. £1.25 a tube.

I think they are. The costs of additional security, SD signage etc has to be paid somehow.

Ponoka7 · 25/05/2020 18:27

I've noticed 2-5p more on some things. There was around a 20p rise after Christmas, so it's noticeable. Especially when people have to often buy outside offers and their usual brands.

Jjou · 25/05/2020 18:51

Yes, definitely. Some of the increase is likely down to having 4 people in the house 24/7 and the cost associated with that, but the cost of groceries has definitely gone up. There is less choice in my local supermarkets as well - sometimes if there’s a particular thing I need only the Tesco Finest version is available. I’m surprised more hadn’t been made of the rising cost though, it seems to have slipped under the radar.

Fresh veg is more expensive. I shop in Asda or Lidl and prices have gone up in both. Meat and fish, not as much so, unless they are doing the sneaky same price smaller packs trick

MrsTidyHouse · 25/05/2020 19:36

The own-brand cans I buy in Tesco are smaller, eg tuna, beans. 2-litre bottled water has doubled in price. And less choice. Toilet rolls are smaller.

TinkysWinky · 25/05/2020 20:57

yes we have noticed a huge increase in our weekly shopping bill - partly that is due to us eating every meal from home, availability of items at our normal brand level eg storecupboard stuff we normally buy the 'value' range but only normal or finest / branded stuff available, removal of offers eg 3 for 2 offers, missing out on yellow sticker items whem doing click and collect, but also just the individual price of some items is up - maybe only 10-15p an item but it soon adds up over a full shop. I'm one of those people who knows the price of everything, it is definitely noticeable. Yes to the food bank collection bin being quite empty too. Worrying times

ParkheadParadise · 25/05/2020 20:59

Definitely a price increase in Tesco.

hotstepper4 · 25/05/2020 22:21

Definitely. My shop is up by £20 a week

Thelnebriati · 25/05/2020 22:47

There's less choice as well, so I sometimes have to buy branded items.

Celeriacacaca · 25/05/2020 22:59

I'm spending around 20% more and notice there isn't the same variety of salad and vegetables. Maybe that's because of the lack of workers this year?

Sarahplane · 25/05/2020 23:29

I've been discussing this too. It's definitely going up. We are home more but DH and Dd always had packed lunch anyway, I did about most of the time so that wouldn't account for the difference. Even without alcohol we seem to be spending about £20-30 a week more.

SquishySquirmy · 25/05/2020 23:33

Yes.
Mine has gone up but this is likely to be a combination of:
-Rising prices
-Fewer offers
-Less time to browse/shop around and I don't feel able to put back the more expensive dinner option if I see a cheaper alternative elsewhere in the shop etc the way I normally would.

  • I buy more in the main shop as I want to avoid top up shops.
  • DC are not having school lunches
  • I'm getting items for our local food bank on every shop as I know the demand has increased.

I am worried about food prices in the medium to long term due to the effect of the pandemic on global agriculture. Shortage of fruit pickers in the UK is the tiny tip of the iceberg.
We import a lot of food. I don't know how well various countries are managing to mitigate disruption to agriculture. The effects of any disruption will not be seen immediately. Logistics also an issue, made worse by potential no deal Brexit. Weak pound will also push prices up.

SpiritEssence · 26/05/2020 00:42

The cost of production has gone up. The rising cost of wages and the temps having to be hired due to the virus. Offers are slowly coming back. I work in retail and see this often but the price rises are quite a lot. Some things rising quite a bit but it has to fall back sadly onto the customer and will rise again

PickAChew · 26/05/2020 00:49

Far fewer deals in my local M&S. I used to save £10-15 off a £75 bill on muktisavers but now lucky if it's £3

MeninSuits · 26/05/2020 01:57

Kettle chips are always on offer - and I haven’t seen them once deducted since lock down.

Been on offer for weeks at both Morrisons and Ocado.
