How early is too early?

At what time do you allow your children to play outside? My DS wakes up between 5.30 and 6 - by 7.30 he is ready to go out and play. I have managed to keep him in for now - but as the gorgeous weather seems to be here to stay for a while - how early do you think a child should be allowed to play in their garden?

No earlier than 8.30am I would think.

FlibbertyGiblets · 25/05/2020 13:27

9am? 7.30 is too early imo. Unless you hate your neighbourinoes, in which case toss him outta that door as early as you like. #joke

I think 9am is appropriate especially on a weekend or bank holiday.

After 9am weekdays, after 10am on a weekend I think.

9am or 10 on a weekend

We only let DS (22 months) out at 9 and I'd shush him if he was being really noisy then and I wouldn't get anything really likely to cause a lot of shouting (e.g. the paddling pool) out until later.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 25/05/2020 13:35

My 3 arent allowed put until 9am

userabcname · 25/05/2020 13:36

I think it depends on your neighbours and how noisy your child is. My neighbours are all retired and up at 6am walking their dogs! I let DS potter about in the garden from 8am but he doesn't scream/shout/have noisy toys. He usually just digs with his spade in the flower beds and plays on his digger. He's 2 so I'm out there with him and could stop any unexpected screeching (not that there ever has been!).

happytoday73 · 25/05/2020 13:39

It depends on neighbours, if will be up and about.. People should not be woken up so I'd agree with 8.30 and little later at weekend.. ...
However when I leave work at 6.30 our nearest neighbour has already put her washing out... She is in her early 80s.. She really wouldn't mind. Other side are up and about similar time...but we may just all be early risers..

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 25/05/2020 13:39

Mine are older and capable of going out and quietly potter about/eat their breakfast so 8am would be fine.

When they were small and loud it was about 10am.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 25/05/2020 13:41

Anything before 9am is selfish imo

pilates · 25/05/2020 13:45

After 9 is fine imo.

Selfsettling3 · 25/05/2020 13:51

9 and I have 2 young children.

I think it depends what they're doing in the garden, and also how close your neighbours are, what kind of precedent has been set etc. Shouting, kicking balls against the wall, jumping on a squeaky trampoline etc would all be inconsiderate in the early hours, especially if you're garden is right underneath someone's bedroom window, and your neighbours are all quiet as mice until 9am.

My neighbours are all usually up and about by 6am. They mow their lawn, chat to each other over the fence, play music etc. And our gardens aren't that big but all the houses on this street are detached so you're never right under a neighbour's window. So I would think nothing of my kids playing out at 6am.

Read the situation and trust your gut. If it feels like it's too loud, too early, then it probably is.

8 during the week, as that's when school begins. 830-900 on a Saturday and 930-1000 on a Sunday.
