Clematis like their roots to be cool but leaves to get lots of sun. But it looks fine - they take years to grow big, were you expecting it to grow faster or something? Are you keeping it well watered?
There's a gardening board by the way, lots of knowledgeable people there.

How often are you watering it? Have you fed it since you planted it? Plants of all species do need to be watered reasonably often at least until they're established, which would be towards the end of the first year. It's been sunny/windy/very dry for the last few weeks so adequate watering is essential.

Also the soil around the base of clematis should be shaded - they don't like warm roots - and it should be planted deeply. Is it still tied in to the original canes/stakes it came with? It does look like it... I would untie it from its restraints and gently tease out the shoots, spread them out a little on the trellis like a fan shape and tie the shoots to the trellis.

And YY to gardening board, lots of knowledgeable posters on there.

Thank you. Ah roots are in the sun and it has sone areas still attached to the cane. I'll make those adjustments

It looks as though it is doing fine slightly smaller than the one I planted last year though mine is a shade clematis. The first couple of years they grow slowly whilst they establish a good root system and then boom after that they grow fast.

clematis can take a couple of years to get established so give it time.

before you lose the plant label, take a good look & work out when it should be pruned. some types of clematis need to be pruned back to 1ft above the ground in February, others don't. And it is very useful to know which yours is.

Is it planted deep enough in the ground? They don't like their roots to be shallow!

I’ve had one for years and I honestly ignore it, and it grows beautifully.
