Black out blinds

Can anyone please recommend some decent black out blinds. My son is constantly awake at 5am despite being clearly tired. Preferably some I can take down in the day time. If not any will do. I'm desperate! Thanks :)

I have the Gro Anywhere blind. The one with suckers that you can attach to any window. Total lifesaver.

Halfstonehomerun · 25/05/2020 07:53

Bloc blinds. You fit a frame round the window (it’s easy!) the blind fits in and it’s total bloc out. It’s also cordless so no worries about safety.

Sorry, just saw that you want them down in the day, you can’t do that with bloc blinds!

We bought a lovely one from Dunelm which has glow in the dark stars. It's a child safe one with no cord dangling

AvocadoPrime · 25/05/2020 08:03

@pairofchairs I did look at the gro ones but the reviews aren't great which put me off.
@halfstonehomerun oh okay, ideally something I can take down easily as we are renting Brew

@AvocadoPrime Oh really?! That surprises me actually. I've had mine for years and I wouldn't be without it (youngest DC is 4 now).

Does it have to be a blind? We have black out linings for curtains - used to have blinds but now prefer doing it this way. You can buy the linings from places like dunelm and many can hook onto existing curtains (on the header tape) with no sewing, so could be removed at end of tenancy.

The fabric doesn’t fray either so if you need to cut to length it won’t fray ( I do sew the linings into the curtains but you don’t have to do that).

@pairofchairs I second the gro-blind, we've used ours for years, it's brilliant. I was actually thinking the other day that it was probably the best child related purchase I ever made (and I have been a parent for 16 years). I'd definitely recommend it, maybe try and get a 2nd hand one to try?

Enidcat5 · 25/05/2020 08:28

We had the gro one and it kept falling down unfortunately so we sent it back

mommybear1 · 25/05/2020 08:30

Agree with @Honeywort the linings are fab we use them now - we had the Gro blinds when DS was a baby and they were a PITA they kept falling down no use at all.

TheVelvetOnion · 25/05/2020 08:31

I've got the Gro blind too which I've had for 3 years and it's still going strong. I probably put it up and down about 3/4 times a day in my 7 month olds room and I've had no problems with it. Keeps him sleeping a little longer in the mornings Smile

daisypond · 25/05/2020 08:32

Magic blinds. Cut to size and they stick to window with static.

MissBax · 25/05/2020 08:33

I second the Gro Blind, we got it as it started getting lighter and it's amazing! DD who used to wake up around 5.45 is now going till 7! Life changer!

drspouse · 25/05/2020 08:36

We had cassette blinds like the bloc blinds in our old house. They were much better than even a blind plus blackout lining. But they are going to have to be fitted to the frame.

Ihaveoflate · 25/05/2020 08:40

Another vote for Magic Blind. Very easy - just pull a sheet off a roll and cut it to size. It sticks to the window with static and really blocks all light.

pairofchairs · 25/05/2020 08:48

I find licking wetting the suckers on the Gro Blind stops it falling down.

It can also be cut to size - I bought an extra one and chopped it in half for when we go and stay at my parents' as they have two small windows in the DCs' room.

Michaelbaubles · 25/05/2020 08:51

Another Groblind fan - have used mine for years and still in use from time to time. It does come unstuck sometimes but it still does the job! I’ve definitely had my money’s worth out of it.

ThePug · 25/05/2020 08:54

Look at perfect fit pleated blinds - can get them from blinds2go. You push little clips into the silicone around the window frame (assuming upvc windows) and the frame clip in. You can remove it all when you leave, but they’re made to measure so probably not reusable elsewhere unless windows the same size. We’ve just got them for our bifold doors and they’re brilliant, strongly considering for DS2s room who’s started waking up pre-6 this last week. The Groblind is a PITA to keep putting up and we never get it completely blackout at the edges

AvocadoPrime · 25/05/2020 15:04

Thank you everyone. I ordered one gro blind thing. But I've got small windows so I'm going to cut it in half. Also saw someone on amazon reviews say she uses command strips as they hold better than the suckers. I am determined to sleep beyond 5am! Thank goodness for prime delivery! Pray for me.

Let us know how it goes!

AvocadoPrime · 26/05/2020 22:19

@MissBax well I cut it to fit and I'm amazed how dark they made the room! Now I pray!Grin
I shall update in the morning.

Brill, glad to hear it OP!

AvocadoPrime · 27/05/2020 07:57

Update: DS woke at 5 as usual but I fed him and he slept with me until 7.30! It was lovely and dark when we woke up, plus when he went to yank open the curtains there wasnt sunlight burning my eyeballs!

Think alot of this is my own fault, where he is teething again I've gone back on my word not to feed him between 11pm and 7am. Maybe if I get tougher he will stop waking so early because it'll be pointless?
