We have a bin with holes funnel lidded type affair, which I bought from Lidl for fifteen quid. Works a treat, burns even green branches down to ash, which we did into the veg patch.

OddBoots · 24/05/2020 18:04

Check with your local fire brigade, ours have asked people not to burn things in their gardens at the moment.

womaninatightspot · 24/05/2020 18:08

We have the same one as lamentations. I would say burning garden stuff is a bit smelly so not great if you have close neighbours but better than a bonfire. If you wait a few days the ash will be cold and you can put it in the normal bin or just dig it into the earth.

Belated thank you for your replies.
(went awol for a while !)
I have bought one, as above bin thing with holes and funnel. Hope it comes with instructions !!

Save your cardboard recycling to get a good flame going in the bottom and then once you've got a nice hot fire going you can start chucking other stuff on top. We don't use the lid until we are finished adding stuff and about to leave it unattended.

adelaya · 26/05/2020 16:59

I’d be surprised if you’re allowed bonfires atm. Most councils have banned them

bizzey · 26/05/2020 17:24

@Lamentations I had not plamned on using cardboard ?
Should I ?
@adelaya we have had no notification about bonfires where we live.

You need to use cardboard/paper to get the whole thing going.
Don't put too much in the bin to start with as you won't get it started.
Don't put it anywhere that you don't mind getting scorched
We also never use the lid until almost done and ready to leave it.

adelaya · 26/05/2020 19:20

We haven’t been notified either but it is on the council website...

When we are allowed, I just chuck stuff in and set light to it, only add the lid when it’s dying down.
Don’t overcrowd it or add loads of green waste as it will just smoke
Have fun

Lamentations · 26/05/2020 19:25

As MogHog says, cardboard makes good kindling just to get things going.

We are allowed to burn garden rubbish. I guess your council website would tell you if you are not and therefore need to use the cover of darkness.
