hi all, we are hoping to move within the next year and i want to start narrowing the search on areas. i would love to live somewhere a bit more rural but with enough amenities that you dont feel totally stranded. we have 3primary school aged dc so good schools are also a must.

I live in Bassetlaw and I really like it, lots of nice villages & not too bad house prices. Worksop is a dump though so stay clear of there.

How about villages near Lincoln?

NellyDElephant · 24/05/2020 15:27

What’s your budget? Southwell or Bingham or Farnsfield are good options.

eastmids · 24/05/2020 15:28

Changed my name for this so my other posts aren't identified.

I adore my village, Heckington in Lincolnshire. We have an amazing community, great facilities, primary school in the village (although my youngest two are at the next one along which is amazing, they were there before we moved here) secondaries in the next town have great reputation and results, my daughter is at the mixed school and they are amazing with her (additional needs), my eldest son is about to start at the boys school and the support in place for him (additional needs) has been brilliant.

We have a train station, big co-op, fantastic independent shops and butchers, doctors, dentists, vets... but genuinely the community can't be beaten!

Probably all irrelevant if it's the wrong area, but if you are interested, ask me anything!

Rutland is lovely with some very nice small towns and villages, Oakham is nice, lovely walks around Rutland water and still within easy distance of Nottingham and Leicester if you wanted a trip to a bigger city.

The East Midlands is a pretty big area - Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Northamptonshire, Lincolnshire, Rutland, Leicestershire etc.

You may need to narrow down the area to get helpful responses OP.

Lovely villages in Derbyshire

MrsExpo · 24/05/2020 16:00

Melbourne in South Derbyshire.

Have a look around Derbyshire Dales. Lots of lovely villages around Matlock, Bakewell, Chatsworth.

City life is probably an hour away tho.

South Derbyshire is nice. Most villages are pretty close to Derby, Nottingham and Leicester.

So, you could look at:
Aston on Trent
Weston on Trent
Melbourne
Ticknall

There's also Castle Donington and Ashby de la Zouch in NW Leics but they're more small towns. Some of the villages around Normanton on Soar also.

Bakewell is nice, a bit further north in the county.

Southwell in Notts also.

Bakewell is nice, a bit further north in the county.

Bakewell is beautiful, but I'd go for Youlgrave or possibly Alport (if budget allows) - very beautiful and amazing walks right on your doorstep, as well as pubs, but only a couple of miles from Bakewell for all your main shopping and amenities. Very steep on the way back if you're walking, though, so handy that the pubs are right there in the village!

Another vote for Southwell. Good high street, good schools. Pretty countryside surroundings and lots to visit with the kids; clumber Park, rufford Abbey, newstead abbey, Sherwood pines etc. Good transport links via Newark train station (LDN), Nottingham via road and the north via the A1.

Farnsfield is smaller but same links and more realistic with your budget. Other nice local villages without a high street but short drive from both include Hallam, eddingley, kirklington, south muskam, Hockerton.

AdoptedBumpkin · 24/05/2020 21:44

How do you define the East Midlands?

Headunderthecovers · 24/05/2020 21:51

I give up!

NoFucksImAQueen · 25/05/2020 11:43

@AdoptedBumpkin I guess for me when I think of east midlands I think of Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire. I know that's not all it's just what comes to mind for me

Don't go for Youlgreave. My sister lived their for a while and it's the most God forsaken place I've ever been too! Fortunately they left after about 6 months.

Juanmorebeer · 25/05/2020 11:53

Anywhere in Rutland, lovely place.

Sounds like "You'll grieve" over the fact you thought of moving there in the first place.

(I'll get my coat)

40somethingJBJ · 25/05/2020 11:55

Breaston, Draycott and Risley are all lovely and really easy access to the M1 and A52

eastmids · 25/05/2020 11:57

If you're including Lincolnshire then I stick with Heckington! You will find prettier, but in far more expensive areas, and genuinely the community here is amazing. And you'll easily get the size you want for the money you have- our large 5 bed (now altered internally to be 6) was £410k!
