Wondering what your DC of this age enjoy? DD is 7 and a half and is a great reader, had enjoyed it for a long time and looking for some new ideas for her. She's not interested in rainbow magic/fairy/princess stories and never has been so they are out. She has read a lot of Geronimo Stilton books , and she is currently a big fan of Enid Blyton and has enjoyed The Naughtiest Girl ones, as well as Famous Five. She's read a few Roald Dahls and has enjoyed those but seems to have a preference for mystery/adventure. I'm toying with Harry Potter but wonder if she might get more out of it in a year or so.

What else have your DC this kind of age enjoyed? Thanks!

I’ve started reading Harry Potter with my 7yr old since lockdown. He’s a great reader but it’s been really nice to sit and read them together. The first 3 are brilliant for that age and he’s absolutely addicted. We’re onto number four now which I think is okay But some bits go over his head - I imagine he’ll go back to it again as he gets older anyway. He now thinks me and dh are both magical but our wands are lost somewhere in the loft. Very careless of us!

I’m sure I’ve seen some girl detective books in Tesco, can’t remember the name....

Ds is loving A Series of Unfortunate Events. I read it to him and then he will read a chapter himself. He is 7.

OhioOhioOhio · 24/05/2020 14:01

Oh. I thought 7 was too young for Harry Potter?

jb23newmum · 24/05/2020 14:06

We are trying out some of the 20th century classics - so far we have read Charlottes Web and The secret garden . Others on the list are The Railway children / carries war / Alice in wonderland / the lion the witch and the wardrobe . I find David Walliams very similiar to Roadl Dahl . We then watch the film version when we have finished the book

Oh thanks everyone so many ideas! I forgot all about Nancy Drew I used to love those !
A series of unfortunate events is a good idea too. Black Beauty I think she might like.
I'm in two minds about Harry Potter - I loved them but was definitely older when I read them. I wonder if she might get a bit scared

When i started Enid Blyton i loved many of the less well known series: The Five Find-Outers, The XXX of adventure (eg castle, valley, island), Mr Galliano’s Circus.

From Classics - The Secret Garden and A Little Princess.

Modern - Dick King Smith animal stories (esp Babe and Daggy Dogfoot), Watership Down if she’s not sensitive, The Spiderwick Chronicles?

My 7yo is loving the first harry potter.

Other popular books have been Dotty Detective, Daisy and the Trouble with..., anything by David Walliams.

Equimum · 25/05/2020 08:00

My son loves David Williams, Tom Gates, the easier Roald Dahl books and the 13 Story Tree House. My DH is currently reading the third Harry Potter to him. His understanding is great, but it would probably be a bit of a struggle to both read and understand it himself. It’s a great read-to book.

Allthegoodnamesweretakenalread · 25/05/2020 08:06

I've been reading Dianne Wynn-Jones with my 7 year old. Her most famous is probably Howls Moving Castle. Her books are very funny and a great introduction to fantasy. T

The “How to train your dragon” series by Cressida Cowell I think, is great for 7/8 year olds. Also Roald Dahl and David Walliams as others suggested.

We’ve also got a box set of the Horrid Henry series.

I recently bought Jenny Nimmo’s Snow spider trilogy - I loved it as a child and thought I’d re-read with DC

DDiva · 25/05/2020 08:16

My daughter loves the worst witch and Amelia Fang

stripeymonster · 25/05/2020 08:47

The Claude series and Mr Penguin books. Hotel Flamingo. Dotty Detective. Fabio the Worlds Greatest Detective.
