Broadband/work woes - moving house

Posted in Work previously but need some help urgently!

I am moving house tomorrow but the earliest Virgin can install the broadband is mid-June I have to work from home every day (this is my normal routine, not just during current times).

Does anyone know the best means of getting temporary WiFi? Sign up to use BT a hotspots, get a dongle? I am getting a bit panicked that I won't be able to work

Try getting a different provider that uses the existing landline

Can you take some annual leave and up your data limit

Itoldyouiwasill · 24/05/2020 06:59

I bought a Huawei AICube for around £200, I believe they're cheaper now. I then bought a sim with unlimited date for £18 from Three and it's really been fine.
I think 3 do a deal on both for around £25 a month

I've tried all the providers and they all have long times to install.

Tether through a mobile first.

We have an EE mobile broadband thing as well as a normal home one. It comes with us when away in the UK (remember people used to be able to do that?) and is useful if the main one has a wobble.

You need to know what operator gives a good connection where you are moving.

EE 4GEE WIFI MINI - it is mobile small router that you can pay for data on rolling contract per month. Upfront cost for the device itself is £40 plus you would have to pay for data and any top ups.

There are 3 downsides:
1. They will do a credit check before this purchase (will be reflected on your credit history as search);
2. Can be expensive if you require data to download files and/or use Skype, Zoom, etc.
3. You need to remember to cancel the rolling contract.

It worked for me for 1 month when I had issues with my regular broadband after upgrade.

I think I can get 20 GB of data from my mobile provider. Wondering how long this will last? I will mainly be emailing, loading web pages and doing video calls.

Can you tether to your mobile? I'd maybe do that and up my data for a temporary measure (many suppliers are doing deals on unlimited data for the lockdown). Otherwise I'd ask which mobile signal works the best locally and buy a dongle.

Great, thanks everyone, this helps! I will start off using my mobile data then order a mobile WiFi device if need be.

Either use an old phone or get a mifi. You can sign up tsk GiffGaff for £20 per month for 80gb data. If you round out you can just bring forward another 80gb for same money. It isn't a contract, just pay monthly

It runs on 02

attackedbycritters · 24/05/2020 07:48

Drop the video calling, just use voice or you will soak through data

Sosounhappy · 24/05/2020 11:30

Or can you talk to your new neighbour's and see if they will let you use their wifi for a few weeks if you are close enougj
