How much sugar (in grams) do you eat per day and what sugary foods do you eat?

I feel I easily see the symptoms of too much sugar with much less sugar than most people (symptoms like acne, bad skin, sugar cash (but not diabetes), etc.) but have since lockdown reduced my sugar intake as I do have a sweet tooth.

I've calculated roughly the sugar intake of each day recently and I think it's around 18-20g of sugar (apparently recommended daily limit is 30g so I'm below that). This consists of:
2-3 fruit (usually mandarin and a handful of raspberries)
1 bar of dark (85%) chocolate

I know there's sugar in carbohydrates as well which I should count but I usually don't eat much carb anyway (except porridge).

I couldn't even begin to calculate that, I just eat whatever I want.

Counting grams of sugar seems rather joyless.

I don't count to be honest, think you could tell without counting the grams if your eating too much.

I eat less than 20g a day as I am doing the Michael Moseley 8 week blood sugar diet. Slightly more at the weekend. It’s the hidden sugar you need to look for in Pre made pasta sauces, cereals, etc. Peri menopause has meant I have to track all this like a demon to lose weight.

I don't know about grams but I have 1 small bar of Wispa 139 calories a day, & sometimes 1 tablespoon of honey on toast 49 calories.
The only processed food I have that may contain sugar is a wholemeal bread roll every day, & sometimes 1 small slice of wholemeal toast.
(I'm on a diet).

Terralee · 25/05/2020 10:27

Oh yes & I have 2 apples which have fruit sugars in.

Thanks everyone so far.

I don't have the time or motivation to count my grams of sugar. It might sound stupid but I try to balance out my sugar intake with exercise!

Inoneminute · 26/05/2020 12:59

It depends. Sometimes I go weeks without eating anything with refined sugar at all. I know I am happier and healthier in those times, my skin is better, I'm less tired and less moody but then I'll have "just one" chocolate or something and stuff my face with all the sugar I can get my hands on for days.

It's very much all or nothing for me. The stupid thing is, after about a week of going without sugar you don't even want it or enjoy it but it's still very easy to give in.

noseresearch · 26/05/2020 13:06

I have bad skin (acne and eczema) so eat low carb, little sugar (maybe 15-20g a day) - but that’s from low GI sources such as fruit/veg

Sadly, didn’t notice any change in my skin from doing this. Although I don’t get sugar crashes like I previously did whilst eating ‘normally’

I think I just have bad genes as I know most people eat much more sugar than I do but have flawless skin, no sugar crashes etc. The most frustrating thing for me is when people with naturally great skin then lecture me on how eating healthy is the key to good skin Hmm

CherryStoneTree · 26/05/2020 13:08

All of it, all of them.

Ukelele3 · 26/05/2020 14:15

@Inoneminute yeah I’m the same. Very much all or nothing. I’ve heard the same from other people too and for other addictions/cravings

@noseresearch yeah I know what you mean. There’s a girl I know who eats about 6 or 7 chocolate bars a day and she has flawless skin. Same with some who drink and smoke lots. Whilst I hardly drink alcohol, don’t smoke, try and limit sugar etc and still find it near impossible to get perfect skin. Could yours be a case of hidden intolerance? Mine is. Even if I completely avoid sugar, if I eat anything with soy or egg in it or a lot of dairy, I’ll have a slight rash, inflamed skin and acne. It’s worth monitoring what sets off your skin issues.

I really have no idea, I don't add sugar to anything, in fact I doubt we have any actual sugar in the house, I usually buy it if we have people coming over for tea / coffee.

I retrained my pallet quite a few years ago now eating LCHF.

I like wine though, and mil ordered a 1kg, yes 1kg bag of pick n mix for the kids and we all eat a lot of berries when they're in season so we're not exactly virtuous!

maxelly · 26/05/2020 14:39

The 30g per day is meant to be for added sugars in things like chocolate, cake, sugary drinks etc rather than naturally occurring sugars in fruit and carbs. It sounds like you are well under the limit for added sugars and don't eat a huge amount overall, it would be a pity to give up the fruit and small amount of chocolate if you enjoy it, but I guess if you are sure sugar is the trigger for your issues you could try replacing a portion of fruit with low sugar vegetables (e.g. green leafy veg) and cut out the chocolate and see if that makes a difference? Also a good idea to replace white carbs with wholegrain where you can?

Thanks so far everyone
