Am I going to die if I eat this chicken?

Took a chicken out of the freezer at 3pm yesterday. Put it on the top of a cupboard so the cat wouldn't eat it.

Forgot about it. Realised at 9am.

The top of the chicken is room temp but if you press it down it is cold. The underneath of the chicken is cold and the bottom of the plate under it (cupboard side) is a bit damp (condensation) and cold.

Am I going to have to Chuck this away or is it safe to eat?

dH insists his parents leave meat out to defrost overnight occasionally. What do you think?

I’m quite relaxed about most things but chicken is the one thing I won’t take risks with (oh...And prawns!)

I probably would eat if cold

Smell it, it will probably be fine. Cook it before you eat it (obviously).

If it’s wrapped/covered I’d eat it

I often leave stuff to defrost overnight but this is about 6 hours longer than I would leave it. You'd probably be fine but I'm not sure I'd risk it personally.

My first thought was it's probably fine but I'm not sure I'd risk it. I know loads of people leave things out overnight on purpose to defrost them. My husband who was a chef for 15 years didn't even let me finish my sentence before saying no. So I'd go with him!

In winter I would risk it but in the current hot weather, I probably wouldn’t.

If you cook it properly I'd say your risk of death is lower than the risk of an otherwise healthy white woman aged 25 dying from Covis

Nope, if it was beef or something maybe but don’t take the risk with chicken. If you are feel particularly brave, make sure you cook it to absolute buggery to kill anything off. And maybe a swig of vodka after!

No I wouldn't but then I do study food science technology I'm very cautious. Just a warning, you don't always get a bad smell or taste if your food is not right. If it did no one would ever get food poisoning.

As a pp said, the smell test is utterly flawed. Some of the most awful food poisoning will happen with absolutely no whiff, change in appearance etc. You simply have to follow the guidance.

I would happily eat the chicken. I think throwing it away is silly and shockingly wasteful but hey ho. (Also, I have lived to the ripe old age of 62 with this kind of attitude and can’t remember getting food poisoning from my own cooking, ever).

We gave the cats some of the chicken and they wolfed it down.

I then put it in the fridge so the cats could eat it the next day and DH forgot and ate it for his tea (or maybe he didnt 'forget' and just wanted to eat it)

He was fine, surprisingly!
