Do you sleep with a feather pillow?

Is it comfy?

Atm I have a memory foam one but it stays in shape a bit too well & isn't always very comfy to sleep on :(

I might have unwittingly slept on one but I've never bought any. It's too cruel.

Yes but the spare bed has memory foam ones and when occasionally I've slept in there I've also liked them. I hate the feathers of my pillows coming through and spiking me though so have decent pillow protectors that stop them poking through. Not sure which I prefer!

Yes! I love them, can't recommend them highly enough. Especially if you have multiple ear piercings!

I've tried everything else - memory foam, fake down, chunky, soft, hard... I have one feather pillow on top of a broad one (can't remember what it is but it's retained some depth).

It's a total sensory thing, and I try hard not to think about what the birds went through to have me sleep like this. I grew up with one which died when I was in my late twenties so I'm very used to having one.

But if you can find an alternative, I would. They pluck the feathers out of live birds who grow them back and then go through the plucking process. Again and again.

One day this pillow will die and I will do anything not to feel the need to buy down again.

I love mine, so comfortable. I’ve had them for years.

They take forever to wash and dry though.

Agree. There is so much cruelty involved in the process. 😓

Stayed in a Marriott years ago, omg the pillows had to research them when we got home. Bought four. They lasted a long time, had to replace them three years ago. They are feather and down. They puff up like marshmallows, but you do need to plump them each morning. The weird thing is that mine are quite puffy still in the morning while OH manages to flatten them completely during the night.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 23/05/2020 00:27

Oh gosh!! Well if I’d had any idea that down was so cruel I would never have used it - how awful. Next time will definitely look for a cruelty free option.

Megan2018 · 23/05/2020 01:16

Not all Down comes from Live Plucking!
It is possible to buy ethical down but it is more expensive.

inwood · 23/05/2020 01:17

No.

Allergic.

Tillygetsit · 23/05/2020 01:47

Yes. They're old as the hills but I love them. My dh hates them and has foam on his side.

1066vegan · 23/05/2020 06:42

"Ethical" depends on where you draw the line on animal cruelty. Live plucking is horrendous and buying pillows that use feathers obtained by live plucking is indefensible.

Buying pillows which contain feathers that are a byproduct of the food industry is preferable but could only be considered ethical if you're happy with the inherent cruelty of eating animals because you like the way that their bodies taste rather than because it's necessary for your own survival.

Feather/down, both pillow and duvet for the adults in this house. We've got cruelty free ones - and eat meat. So far they've all lasted really well and have never been replaced.

Anyone got wool pillows or duvets?

I would like to try them when the DC's synthetic ones need replacing, as I've heard they last longer and are better for allergy sufferers.

SundayReilly · 23/05/2020 07:26

So timely
Just ordered myself some .
For me nothing else compares.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 23/05/2020 08:17

I have the IKEA ones, with the protective zip up covers. These are vital to stop dribble killing the down.

Northernsoullover · 23/05/2020 08:27

I've had my feather pillows for a very long time. I wouldn't replace them now unless they were a byproduct. However I do have extremely thick pillow protectors on them which will keep them in good condition for longer.

Franticbutterfly · 23/05/2020 08:35

No as it would make me cough a lot. I have feather cushions on the sofa though.

Wagamamas · 23/05/2020 08:38

Yes i love them and love the noise they make. The usual ones get lumpy when washed.
I have a feather duvet too. Invested in the best mattress and bedding as i loved the hotel feel.

wibdib · 23/05/2020 10:15

I grew up with down pillows and duvets - they were incredibly comfortable - but dh is asthmatic and feathers set him off so have featherless lumpy things now...

Dh has a latex dunlopillow which he loves - he had them when younger, then his had got really old and been replaced with other synthetic things plus he tried a memory foam one that he found too solid. Got him dunlopillow ones this year (having managed to buy some wrong ones en route as I forgot the name Confused) and he is happy again. Might have to get some for me as mine are now really thin in the middle and full by the edge despite trying to plump and save them regularly.

I now sleep with either wool or silk duvets - both are lovely and I can highly recommend. My wool one was from Baavet which I use autumn through to spring. My silk one I had been thinking about and saw them at something like the ideal home show with a good deal on, so treated myself. Both have been great investments and I love them. Definitely feels more like feather for sleeping under as you don’t get sweaty in the same way you do under synthetic duvets.

Dc both have wool duvets - bought once they were through the danger times of wetting the bed.

I am contemplating a wool pillow but haven’t been anywhere that has them to try before buying.
