Best weedkiller?

What kind of weedkiller do you use? We have a bit of a problem out back with weeds, last year the back was ignored and previously we had a gardener. Decided to try and tackle the weeds myself but unsure what products to buy.

Mostly natural here.

Loosen ground and pull out brambles, dandilions etc.

Hoe to remove the small stuff when it’s young. Hoe gravel.

Cardboard down on worst areas after weeding. Then lift and check for regrowth

Use a glysophate based weed killer on the leaves of any regrowth. That way it doesn’t pollute the soil too much or affect any other plants.

If you just spray weed killer you risk contaminating the soil.

And don't use spray weedkiller if there is a breeze or windy, wait till it is calm. Otherwise the stuff drifts everywhere and kills the plants in somebody else's garden.

I don't use any weed killer, just dig out weeds. I have three cats.

KingOfDogShite · 22/05/2020 15:36

Digging is the best weed killer.

masonmason · 22/05/2020 20:24

Thanks. Sorry I wasn't really clear about the weeds. They are not on the grass they are in between slabs and coming up through a gravel area. I thought getting as much out from the slabs then putting weed killer along to get the roots was the right idea. I don't want to dig in the gravel because it has plastic underneath and digging will cause more damage to I was going to pull them up then put some on.

Glyphosate needs to be sprayed on green tissue for it to translocation effectively. Spray on the leaves and leave it to work. Do not treat larger weeds with a second dose to try and achieve a higher dose, it actually reduces the efficacy by causing run-off.

Dreamersandwishers · 22/05/2020 20:49

Round up. Needs to be sprayed on green leaf, not roots, but as long as it doesn’t rain you will begin to see results in 2 days. Good for clearing large areas prior to reseeding.

HappyHammy · 22/05/2020 20:54

Kettle of boiling water and pull them up or dig up with a kitchen fork

peajotter · 22/05/2020 22:31

Between paving stones is annoying. I use a stiff brush to destroy the leaves regularly. (Or would if I could be bothered). You could go for roundup for any foliage that grows back repeatedly, eg dandelions, but I’d give it a brush once a fortnight first. That way you’ll get all the new seedlings that are just establishing.

Silvercatowner · 22/05/2020 22:38

I have a weed burner. I pretend it's a flame thrower.

user1493494961 · 22/05/2020 22:52

Kettle of hot water or hot water with a bit of bleach between paving slabs.

Hydrobatespelagicus · 22/05/2020 23:59

I also use boiling water but I dont pull the weeds up, they just wilt back into nothing if you get them young enough.

Dreamersandwishers · 23/05/2020 08:06

Ok I retract Roundup. Gardener used it but I just read that B&q are going to stop selling it due to links with cancer.😱 not good.

Onesmallstepforaman · 23/05/2020 08:39

Roundup(glyphosate) is one of the safest products you can buy. The cases in America were from gardeners who were using a wide range of chemicals, including fungicides and insecticides. These were, and are far more likely to cause harm. I'm no keener on Monsanto than anyone else, but roundup is an incredibly safe chemical. The products available for domestic use are at a lower concentration of active ingredient than those used professionally.

Onesmallstepforaman · 23/05/2020 08:48

@dreamersandwishers. Just read an article on b & q stopping selling Roundup. I've used chemicals as part of my job for over 40 years. To date I don't appear to have any health concerns. BUT, UK law on protective clothing has always been stronger than that in the USA.
Everyone makes their own choices, but as an amateur gardener, I'd buy roundup at clearance price.

Dreamersandwishers · 23/05/2020 16:55

@Onesmallstepforaman thanks for that update. It has been my go to on the recommendation of my gardener, so good to hear a different perspective.
