Tight chest- hay fever?

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 21/05/2020 21:14

Ds has been on a long bike ride for a couple of hours with a friend this evening. Mostly through local fields and countryside. He suffers with hay fever and had taken medication but has been back for about an hour now and is still complaining of a tight chest.

Could this be hay fever related?

Definitely. I have quite bad hayfever, always have had, & wheezing/tight chest was always an issue. Especially after I'd been out in the evenings. Worst time of day, TBH.

Is there anything I can do for him? He’s not struggling to breath or anything.

Typical they went out in the evening so it wasn’t so hot.

Yep I've had this too. Make sure he showers and changes his clothes to remove the pollen. He could also do a steam bowl to clear his breathing a bit. When mine gets really bad I have an inhaler but I basically do similar things to when I have a cold

Thank you. He has showered and changed and I will suggest the steaming to him. I wonder if it’s worth taking him to the pharmacy for stronger meds (if there is such a thing?).

could be.
I have allergic asthma. I also don't wheeze, I get a tight chest and sigh/yawn a lot and feel very tired.
good that he has showered. I find showers relieve it a lot. might be the steam.

how old is he? if he's an older teenager then a steroid nasal spray might be an option,

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 21/05/2020 22:09

He’s 16.

in that case have a look at beconase or pirinase what it says for his age.
it works wonderd for me - also for my 'normal' hayfever symptoms

PickAChew · 21/05/2020 22:41

Beconsse is a game changer. Never had any luck with antihistamines (even cetirizine knocks me out, loratadine doesn't help with the respiratory symptoms but does keep prickly heat/urticaria at bay) but beconase for the nose and sodium cromoglycate eyedrops in peak grass pollen season make a big difference.

justasking111 · 21/05/2020 22:44

OH walks the dogs in the morning through woodland, he wheezes badly some days so showers washes hair, changes clothes. He has found beconase a great help even though he takes piriton every day. He has had to use a ventolin inhaler on occasion. The pollen is the worst for 70 years they say.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 22/05/2020 03:35

I’ve just had a look and beconase says it’s 18+ Which is a shame.

have a look at the bnf which gives more details than the package leaflet

or give your gp a call.

Oblomov20 · 22/05/2020 07:36

beconase, you say? I will try and get some. Ds1(16) also has it bad atm. I'm not that bothered by the 18 age restriction.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 22/05/2020 08:03

Well I did wonder that because ds is 6’1” so taller than me! I’ll take a look at the side effects.

If his breathing is affected don’t hesitate to seek medical attention (asthma can come on v suddenly and be v severe/life threatening).

If symptoms persist for a couple of hours, do think about getting Assessed by gp/out of hours gp as it’s not really normal. It may be that he needs a reliever inhaler or it could be something else (they would need to ask more questions and examine).

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 22/05/2020 08:45

Thank you, luckily his breathing was not affected. He just kept holding his chest. He’s fine this morning and said it lasted until he went to bed.

Would the GP see him? I’m vaguely concerned he may have a more severe reaction next time.

OP posts:
bluefoxmug · 22/05/2020 08:49

it's worth seeing the gp. maybe ask at reception if the asthma nurse would be better for as assessment.

tbh if his chest felt tight, is breathing was affected.
don't fuck about with lungs!

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 22/05/2020 10:20

Ok yes you’re right, I was thinking in a more severe way they weren’t but that’s not to say next time wouldn’t be an emergency.
