Clapping in perpetuum

I’m just wondering... when will the last clap be?

Who will tell us?

Do we just keep clapping at the sky forever?

Is it like being the first one to clap, someone will need to take the hit and be the last one?

I managed to time getting a Gina and tonic with the clap today so not sure if it happened round here. Seems to have dwindled each week but still some hardcore clappers out up to last week.

I'm a nurse and I fucking hate the clap. Don't know why exactly, just seems patronizing and trite. It's too easy to carry on as normal, and just feel good about yourself for clapping for 2 minutes once a week. Nurses everywhere are having a really shit time and we are meant to be grateful for a flipping clap🤬

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 21/05/2020 20:47

Feel better for that rant🤣

Chillipeanuts · 21/05/2020 20:49

There was a full on concert tonight, singer and PA system. Same one who “entertained” everyone within a couple of miles, like it or not, on VE Day.
Some people just can’t help themselves.

TorkTorkBam · 21/05/2020 20:50

Today I found out why my townie friends do the clapping. It is a way of meeting up that is acceptable. They all go out have a clap then spend half an hour chatting to their neighbours. Brilliant.

GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 21/05/2020 20:50

Rant away, Theysaurus!

AnnaNimmity · 21/05/2020 20:52

I haven't clapped since the first week really but my children who are normally quite keen just forgot tonight. We were having dinner in the garden. It will peter out soon surely?

onemouseplace · 21/05/2020 20:53

Deliveroo seem to feel the need to remind me to go out and clap every week as well.

Ours was noisier than it has been in a while tonight - although we have got the windows open so it might just be that.

B0bbin · 21/05/2020 20:56

Windows open tonight as it was so hot, so DS was drifting off and then it all started. I want it to stop now. How about during the Summer months everyone waves a flag instead of banging pans, or the government give nhs staff/ keyworkers a payrise.

mrsm43s · 21/05/2020 20:58

I reckon "the last time I clapped" will be a bit like "the last time my child sat on my lap". We won't realise its ended until we suddenly realise we haven't done it for ages!

Fishfingersandwichplease · 21/05/2020 20:59

I did it cos my daughter loved it the my friend who is a frontline NHS worker said she finds it cringeful so l gave it a miss tonight!

We live next door to an NHS frontline worker and she still claps on her doorstep, along with every house on our cul-de-sac, so we’re happy to carry on.
Neighbour other side has a very young kid though whose bedroom is at the front of the house so I do feel a bit guilty at all the noise it makes on the street, she’s probably sleeping.

Pixxie7 · 21/05/2020 21:11

As soon as we don’t need them anymore then they will be forgotten.

Nottobesoldseparately · 21/05/2020 21:19

I've stopped doing it.

The fuck you type rants all over social media from the very people we were applauding made me think why bother.

So I don't.

begoniapot · 21/05/2020 21:21

Didn't see anyone tonight, but I forgot anyway

WhatsHappeningCaroleBaskin · 21/05/2020 21:22

Haven't clapped for the last 2 weeks.. and I worked for the NHS.

It clashes with DD's bedtime and I'd rather see actual change, than have people clap.

I give you permission to stop Grin

WhatsHappeningCaroleBaskin · 21/05/2020 21:23

*work not worked

Ilovecats14 · 21/05/2020 21:25

No one on my road claps. We do speak more though (socially distanced) which is nice.

Merigoround · 21/05/2020 21:25

We didnt go out tonight. In fact, last week as we came in we said - shall this be the last one?
I dont see what a group of people clapping in a back treet of a small town does for anyones morale to be honest. We did it at the start as it was a community thing but it soon descended into less of a community and more of a showoffs grandstand.

lastburritos · 21/05/2020 21:29

I asked DH this exact question this evening. Much more lacklustre clapping here this evening and the metal spoons and saucepans have been downgraded to just tapping wooden spoons together! But yes, when do we stop? Who decides, and when? Who will be the last Clapper? 😄

Kernowgal · 21/05/2020 21:32

My elderly (and rather pompous) neighbour rings each week to remind us about clapping at 8pm. I’m usually at work but tonight I lied and said we were just about to have dinner. It was definitely less noisy tonight, fewer people out.

I think she wants to see us to say hello, and the clapping is just an excuse.

lokoho · 21/05/2020 21:36

We're loving the clap here. Pop out, clap a few times, say hello to everyone and wish them all well, then bob down the next street for the band that is playing (that is really good) and have a, slightly odd, distant dance and wave at the babies. They do four or five numbers and then we all go back in. If you don't want to, don't do it, etc.

Our neighbours are great though. We haven't got any of this mad stasi stuff round our way. We've got a good (well dispersed) crowd and it's nice to see them!

canigooutyet · 21/05/2020 21:40

I wasn't told to do anything in the first place.
Sounds like I had a lucky break, don't have to wait for someone to tell me to stop.

Destroyer · 21/05/2020 21:41

It was lacklustre last week, but back in a vengeance this week. I’ve never clapped - seems pointless.

c3pu · 21/05/2020 21:42

I don't clap, I send thoughts and prayers instead
