Can anyone recommend some good quality probiotics?

I have problems with my gut ( chronic constipation, possibly IBS plus I am generally anxious which affects my digestive system). I used to take probiotics but can’t remember where I bought them. I also want to boost my immune system & have read that probiotics are good for doing that. Any recommendations welcome 🙏

I'd be interested in anyone's experience of symprove. I've just started another brand to see if probiotics will help, but symprove was suggested to me by the gastroenterologist. It's just so expensive though but if it works (and I can eat cheese and milk chocolate) then it's worth it I guess.

I have a mixture of kefir, yoghurt and various other foods high in the things in my diet (because I like them).

Kefir seemed to have the greatest effect on gastro symptoms.

I have bowel disease and belong to some online groups for it. Symprove is the one they all seem to use and say works, although I haven't tried it myself. It's is expensive but seems to be the best you can buy.

NewMama20 · 24/05/2020 15:33

I tried Symprove and it upset my stomach and made me feel worse. I use Bio-Kult and my IBS is much better since taking these. Also stops me from getting an upset stomach when I go on holiday.

StrawberryJam200 · 24/05/2020 15:37

Kefir is a fermented yoghurt drink which is apparently revolting but you can get used to it. Very trendy at the moment! That's all I know, am sure other know about it's health claims/benefits.

SavannahCat · 24/05/2020 15:40

Hi OP. Holland & Barrett Ultra Maximum Acidophilus, 20 billion good bacteria per capsule. Absolutely fantastic! And, half price at the moment, £9.49 for 60 capsules

MitziK · 24/05/2020 16:06

Kefir isn't revolting at all. I usually get the Biotiful ones in the chilled drinks section of the supermarket, but they are very similar in taste to drinking yoghurt - without the gallons of sugar added;

The natural flavour has 3.7% sugars, the Cherry flavour has 6.4, which compares well to standard natural yoghurt at around 6% and the flavoured and drinking yoghurts at 10% plus, 12% for Actimel.

It's supposed to have a wider range of cultures in it. And, considering I'm lactose intolerant, it's good to be able to get some dairy in without having to search high and low for Ewes' Milk.

I take the Bioglan Super Strength www.hollandandbarrett.com/shop/product/bioglan-biotic-balance-high-strength-capsules-60009894
Definitely helped my gut health

Bloomburger · 24/05/2020 16:11

Prebiotics are the way forward. Take probiotics to populate your gut then feed them with prebiotics. No point just keeping taking the bacteria if you've gut problems you need to populate it then feed the bacteria.

Bimuno powders are amazing.

I also think kefir is good stuff, I buy it from the Polish stuff because it's much cheaper. I did try making it but ended up with far more than I needed. Amazingly it keeps me "regular" as my grandmother would say.

Belindabelle · 24/05/2020 16:58

I came on to say Kefir. I make my own from grains I got online. I use whole organic milk and do a second ferment with fruit/botanicals. Really easy to do. It tastes like a really creamy Greek yog.

I have been taking it for 18 months and the change in my digestive health is amazing.

sophiesiobhan · 07/03/2021 09:36

Belindabelle am really interested to know what your kefir recipe is! And which grains you use. I have seen some online buy if you’ve got a good result with your gut I would love to copy you if you’re willing to share! PM me if you prefer? Thank you!

Frazzledd · 07/03/2021 09:39

Are you following a low Fodmap diet? It worked wonders for me!

Tickledtrout · 07/03/2021 09:47

Think of adding a turmeric supplement too. Really helped my IBS. I started it for joint inflammation not realising it's use in traditional medicine for gut inflammation. Helped me where biokult hadn't really

This thread reads like a covert advert for Symprove which is also - so coincidental - all over Instagram at the moment. Millie McKintosh was shilling it only yesterday.

It’s well-marketed garbage and I doubt any gastroenterologist would endorse it unless paid to do so because there are so many other cheaper and better alternatives. Kefir is just one, and you can even make that yourself.

PoptartPoptart · 07/03/2021 10:01

Does anyone know if Yakult does the same as kefir?

Unfucked · 07/03/2021 10:03

Grin That will teach me to read the thread - revived from ages ago to ask about kefir. Sorry.

Bored1000 · 29/09/2023 23:20

I have been taking Yacult to years and definitely thinks it helps with constipation and having regular as clockwork bowel movements.
