After effects of 2 x Sumatriptan?

Yesterday I had a tight deadline for work and a ton of stuff to do to achieve it - and woke up with a proper bloody migraine!

I took 2 paracetamol and a sumatriptan first thing, an anti-sickness in the middle of the day as the nausea was lingering, but by the time I hit the deadline my head was pounding again so I took more paracetamol and a 2nd sumatriptan.

This morning I am headache free, thank goodness, but I feel oddly sicky, spaced out and jittery. Sumatriptan does give me side effects, mainly tightness and pain in the throat and sensitivity to heat for a few hours, but they're mild and it otherwise works well.

I know you can take more than one although I rarely need it - is this the after effects of taking 2 in 24 hrs? They were almost 12 hrs apart...

For me the spaced out nauseous feeling comes from the actual migraine, which can last a few days even without the headache

MortyFide · 21/05/2020 08:48

Wow @ravensoaponarope, I've been having migraines for 20 years and for some reason I'd completely forgotten about that.

Of course, I was so fixated on having taken 2 triptans - which I wouldn't normally - that I forgot. After an 18 hour migraine I'm bound to feel a bit off. Thanks to the drugs I rarely have them for long these days!

You're right, thanks for reminding me. Blush

I've taken 2 before for an absolute bitch of a migraine and not had any ill effects. I agree the spaced out feeling is probably the migraine rather than the meds. Not sure about the jitteryness.

I agree, more likely to be a migraine hangover. Hope it passes quickly.

I get this after a migraine regardless of what I have taken to get it to bugger off - migraine postdrome.

Have a look at this OP: www.healthline.com/health/migraine/bouncing-back

Cheers all...I feel less jittery but still a bit queasy and my stomach feels generally uncomfortable. Sad

I have more work to finish today but can't seem to focus and here I am on MN talking about poor concentration

Ugh - postdrome. Horrible. Hope it passes quickly for you.

For me the spaced out feeling is most definitely from the Sumatriptan. Sometimes I can ward off a migraine with over the counter stuff. Sometimes I have to resort to Sumatriptan. I say resort because it makes me feel really weird - floaty and spaced out. Very tired and spaced out initially and hours later very wired. I try not to take them on an afternoon otherwise it wipes the day out for me and then I'm awake all night.

Interesting comment about the effect on your throat op. It makes mine feel tight and uncomfortable too.

stellabelle · 21/05/2020 12:15

I normally take 2 for a migraine. Never had any side effects at all.

WhatwouldLangdo · 21/05/2020 12:18

Sumatriptan gives me awful sinus pain but that spaced out feeling is usually postdrome

CuppaZa · 21/05/2020 12:31

My doctors advised I can take up to 300mg sumatriptan in 24 hours

HoldMyLobster · 21/05/2020 12:45

I get the weird throat effects from Sumatriptan too. And I also get all sorts of weird spacey feelings and nausea.

I've switched to Rizatriptan which has fewer side effects for me, although I still often feel very weird and tired even after the headache has gone.

Hope you feel better soon OP. Migraines suck.

Troels · 21/05/2020 12:45

When I took two Sumatriptan (I switched to Naratriptan now) The next day I felt jet lagged, like I flew long haul, very much out of it and body aches. All better than the vomiting heavy migraine.

MortyFide · 21/05/2020 17:43

Yeah the sumatriptan side effects are a mild discomfort compared to the migraine itself. I was horrified last night thinking I'd taken 2, but was still going to have to go to bed with the poxy headache, ugh. Luckily it eased up.

Still, I wonder if it's worth asking for one of the others?
