How many of you have actually seen a doctor?

Just wondering. My mum is pretty ill, not Covid, but she’s had four telephone appointments with the doctor and her tablets altered, but she’s not doing well. I’m wondering who has seen their doctor and how serious it was before they let you.

My husband has. He was quite ill though with a a viral infection.

I rang 111 and was told to make an appointment that day with his GP or, if that wasn't possible, to take him to the nearest A&E.

I was seen about two weeks ago by my GP. Had to do online triage which told me to call 999 but I didn't agree.
So I had to ring doctor's surgery and got a triage call back to decide if I needed an appointment. I'll spare you the waffle but they thought I had appendicitis and I saw the GP and then I was sent to a&e and then I sat on an almost empty ward for 5 hours waiting for test results. Wasn't appendicitis in the end just a ruptured cyst.
Has your mum actually asked to see someone in person? I wonder if they don't think they can do any more than they have over the phone? Might be worth you or your mum being blunt and asking if a face to face appointment is possible.

CornedBeefThighs · 20/05/2020 20:35

Would your mum benefit from actually seeing her GP face to face, does she need a physical exam?
My understanding is the GPs will see patients in person if they really need it but are trying to consult over video or the phone as much as possible.

I have, really bad case of tonsillitis after the first course of antibiotics didn’t work. About two weeks later ringing 111 in agony, fever and had an appointment at hospital, who wanted to double check I hadn’t developed Quinsy. I hadn’t thankfully, was just given another dose of antibiotics and steroids

Just seen a gp today for DS , a skin issue that's not very serious
But we live in the quiet part of the country

I've been in for a flare up of a chronic condition as I was in pain. They needed to take blood pressure and examine joints and reflexes before rejigging medication.

MrsAvocet · 20/05/2020 21:11

I've been seen in outpatients at hospital, but I needed dressings changed. Once things started inproving they taught me to do it myself and since then I've only had telephone contact. GP contact has all been by phone but I believe they are seeing people face to face if essential. If your Mum is not getting better despite 4 phone appointments I don't think it would be unreasonable to ask for her to be seen and examined.

moobar · 20/05/2020 21:14

I took Dd yesterday. She had tonsillitis at start of lock down and got antibiotics over phone. She still has cough so went in to be checked.

I was given time to arrive. I then had to take her (18 months) to the back door and phone. I was then met by a doctor in scrubs with mask gloves and visor. I was given scrubs mask and gloves. Dd was not. Dd cried a lot.

We went in and she was given a full check over. I stopped at back door and put scrubs gloves and mask into a huge outside bin.

Was all very strange, especially as I had not been out for eight weeks. No wonder she cried.

iklboo · 20/05/2020 21:16

I've been to outpatients with a suspected torn pelvic ligament. They can't scan my yet so it's painkillers for now.

Sallycinammonbangsthedruminthe · 20/05/2020 21:16

I have. 6 times since lock down for appointments and 4 follow on calls plus one facetime appointment with a consultant from the hospital. My care has been outstanding and I have been overwhelmed by the care I recieved n such dificult circumstanes. Non of mine have been covid related just general long running ailments. Ask for an appointment for your mum if she isnt improving.

Honeyroar · 20/05/2020 22:45

Yes I think she needs to be seen really. We’ve had a telephone conversation/appointment every week for five weeks and she’s still struggling. Her neighbour is a retired doctor and she called me over tonight to say I really must push for her to be seen. I was just wondering how much of a fight it would be..

Thanks everyone.

Same issue 5 weeks in a row? Does she need to be physically examined?

Andahelterskelterroundmylittle · 20/05/2020 22:51

Yes, I have

EnlightenedOwl · 20/05/2020 22:54

Given up on ours presume they are open. The repeat prescription is being processed in seconds of request being put in as this always used to take a good day or so to process I'm assuming they aren't terribly busy

Bertoldbrecht · 20/05/2020 23:05

I had sciatica and a numb foot, never had it before. I listed the symptoms over the phone and he agreed. Started me on some fairly heavy duty medication but I've never been examined. Like a previous poster said prescriptions can take 2 days normally but now they are within the hour !

Honeyroar · 20/05/2020 23:09

Same issue ongoing for five weeks...

OP posts:
Howmanysleepsnow · 20/05/2020 23:27

What is the issue? Any crossover with Covid19 symptoms? If not, highlight that and suggest she wears a face mask.

Honeyroar · 20/05/2020 23:32

No, it’s neurological- along the lines of Parkinson’s, but the drugs are making her like a zombie, no energy or appetite. Like a ghost of herself. Not herself at all.
