What is this on my daughters feet?

These marks appeared out of nowhere about a month ago and lasted for approximately a week. She said they where very painful to walk on. She has being doing the typical teenager thing of staying in bed most of the day so I don’t think they were blisters.

Could it be Covid? I am very doubtful but what could be another explanation ?

As a family we have stayed in and at that point she hadn’t been out of the house for a month. I have been shopping every 10 days. She is 15. When the marks first appeared there was nothing in the media about “Covid toes”.

Any suggestions?

I see what you mean about Covid toes. That's what I would think (layperson here). Maybe if/when there are anti body tests available she could get one.

If she was staying in bed all day with the quilt over her feet, they could have been the start of pressure sores. Anybody can get them from being in the same position for extended periods of time.

Could be chilblains?

Googled chilblains and that is related to cold but discovered that Covid toes are like chilblains.

At the time I told her it could be pressure sores but she was adamant she wasn’t in bed with the soles of her feet against the mattress.

The quilt will be quite enough pressure to cause them.

I got one on the side of my foot just from sitting in the same position each weekday to work from home (legs up on settee to stay within reach of the plug socket, no hard surface, just the settee cushions I rested my foot against). It really, really burned.

Mine were like that after I was ill with a Covid-type illness earlier this year (pre-testing). Work are arranging anti-body testing pending confirmation from the corporate health insurance provider. Very keen to find out what it was.

Howmanysleepsnow · 20/05/2020 21:48

I had that around the time I had covid type symptoms, and DH had covid. Wasn’t pressure sores in my case as I was constantly on the go looking after dh and 3 sick dc.

Staying in bed for most of the day? I don't know many teenagers for whom that is a "thing". Maybe I know the wrong kind of teenagers. Or parents. But staying in bed most of the day - quite possibly circulatory, and far more likely than Covid toes if she hasn't been anywhere and there's little chance she could have caught it.

On a separate note, are you aware of the very significant link between osteoporosis later in life and lack of exercise amongst teenage girls? I'd be far more worried about that.

Thanks for suggestions. Interesting to hear from people who had the virus and experienced similar. Thanks for commenting.

They can't be pressure sores surely. It would be extremely unlikely a teenager would lie still in bed with the soles of their feet pressed against the bed long enough for that.

I'd email a photo to the GP.

Slatkater · 21/05/2020 11:48

No I don’t think they were pressure sores either @AnnofPeeves

My first thought was chilblains too...

Circulatory problems. Not moving will affect the blood movement.

TheMostHappy · 21/05/2020 13:11

They look like bruises to me, and would fit the week long time-scale. Like she's been walking in heels for too long or jumped down from somewhere and landed heavy. I don't think COVID.

She has been moving at night, asleep during the day, up all night chatting to friends. There have been a number of threads during lockdown about nocturnal teenagers and it seems quite common.

She doesn’t wear heels, strictly trainers. I will ask her if she remembers landing heavily on her feet.

Slatkater · 21/05/2020 16:58

No, definitely did not land heavily on her feet. Apparently I asked her that at the time.

Thanks @WhenItIsOver have had a look at that link.

Covid toes. High probability in my view.
