There's a cat in my kitchen.

It isn't mine. It has a lovely home a few doors away from us. Every time I open my living room windows or my patio doors i turn around and he is trotting about in my house.
I have a cat. She HATES this other cat.....especially since he keeps popping in to eat her food!
I feel like we can't open our doors or enjoy our garden because he is always there meowing at me or begging to be stroked. If you are in the garden, he won't leave you alone. I've had to turf him out about 5 times in the last hour, it also really stresses my cat out. She has become really aggressive as she is always on edge about him being there. I swear half the time he wants to wind my cat up! It's like he enjoys annoying her!
I have tried squirting him with water......he keeps coming back.

What can I do......my sister has told me to speak to his owners but I don't see what they can do. Any suggestions?

At least it'll catch the rat.

OddestSock · 20/05/2020 17:41

Cats are dicks. I have two cats who I adore, but they are still dicks.

No advice, but we were away for a bit earlier this year, and a similar looking cat to one of ours came into the house and cuddled with the people who came in to feed ours and convinced them he was one of our cats.

IRememberSoIDo · 20/05/2020 17:42

It's his house now!

Pmsl at speaking to the owners! I have two idiot cats. I don't think there's anything you can do.

You need to explain to the cat about social distancing.

Put the news on.

TheHighestSardine · 20/05/2020 17:47

Refuse to engage. Never feed him, toss him out (gently) whenever he comes in, don't stroke. He'll get bored and move onto easier marks. And get a cat flap that reads chips.

No point talking to the owners! What are they going to do, ask him not to? Your sister's very optimistic :)

CocoR · 20/05/2020 17:49

We have one like this. There's a silver tabby that lives in one of the houses behind us, and she is beautiful and friendly, but my ginger absolutely hates her and wants her to get the fuck off his territory.

Speaking to the owners isn't going to do much.. what are they going to do? Sit him down for a serious chat? 🤣

Sorry.. nothing helpful!

Pipandmum · 20/05/2020 17:53

Just ignore the cat. Make sure it isn't your cats food. Hopefully it will find another 'second home'.

Mrsemcgregor · 20/05/2020 17:56

what can I do?

Take a photo And post it here, it won’t help but it will make me happy Grin

JustSew · 20/05/2020 17:57

We have the same problem. Our cat is safe if the doors are closed as enemy cat can't get in the cat flap. It actually sits outside the cat flap taunting my cat who looks at me feebly saying "make it go away".
As soon as I open patio doors it creeps in and makes a beeline for the cat food.
I yell at it, it runs out, then comes back in next time it's passing.

oohnicevase · 20/05/2020 17:57

I had this and checked with the owners they were ok for me to squirt with water .. I had an old cat who couldn't fight him off and I didn't want him
Upset . Didn't take too long tbh before he got the message !

PurpleChevron · 20/05/2020 17:58

yes i gave my sister a Hmm when she suggested that.....she isn't a cat owner and knows nothing of their pigheadedness.
I had a neighbour ask me to stop my cat pooing in their garden once. I said I would speak to her Grin

Since writing this post he's been in 3 or 4 more times.
Every time he comes in i pick him up and put him back out. I just want him to bugger off.

get a supersoaker and stand guard :-)

CrazyDuchess · 20/05/2020 18:04

Be persistent with the water spray!
I just use a normal spray bottle that you'll find in hairdressers - got rid of my visiting cat problem fairly quickly, but you have to use it every time!

CrazyDuchess · 20/05/2020 18:05

Dont pick him up or speak nicely to him - be silent

IncrediblySadToo · 20/05/2020 18:10

Apparently spraying them works better if they don't realise it's you doing it. So they associate it with the house rather than one person.

Make sure it's quite a wet spray
Be careful what spray bottle you use (of course)

Good luck!

TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet · 20/05/2020 18:11

You need to teach him it’s not ok to be in your house. Water squirt him every time you see him. Hiss at him too. Don’t pick him up, just generally be rude to him.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 20/05/2020 18:11

putting a used litter tray outside can help to dissuade visiting stranger cats

but otherwise, brisk, brusque and unwelcoming is the way to go

we have a cat up the road who wanted our garden as his territory... idiotcat and stranger cat were having a stand off on the outside path and one of the dogfaces came running over to see if ours was okay and got an unkind smack on the nose for his trouble as idiotcat was so angry, however seeing idiot cat reprimand a 7 stone GSD seriously worried stranger cat and he's not been back since.

another house at the back is a rental and the tenants always seem to have cats...but they are all way less persistent than stranger cat so clapping and sending them home always seems to work, along with a used tray left out for a week or so
