Hi, I’m a student nurse who from next week is going into an extended placement in a hospital until September. We will still be classed as student nurses/ where the uniform/be appropriately supervised but we will be getting paid a band 3 salary. I am a single parent and curt felt
Recieve just under £14000 in student loan/grant that come directly to me. I live in a rented property and currently receive £406 a month universal credit which I just put straight towards my rent.

My student loan is taken into account for my universal credit which is why I get the amount I get. When I start on this placement. I will earn a wage of approx £1000 a month (maybe a bit more I’m not 100% sure). I know this will cancel out my UC and I will receive £0 from them I think. However, do I need to let them
Know I will be earning a wage for a few months? I don’t currently work around my studies as I use all my childcare for uni/placements (that aren’t paid normally of course, just these exceptional times) and once September comes I won’t be working, As I’ll be back in uni/placement.

The month after I get paid my final wage, will UC recognise that no PAYE wage has come in and go back to my
£406? I’m
A little bit worried as they took a long time to sort out my claim (I was working full time before and earned too much to claim tax credits/UC) and it was a nightmare so I’m a bit worried That it’s going to be a pain to sort when I’ve finished this extended placement.

If you can help that would be great. Thanks!

Hi, HMRC will report your earnings to UC so you don't need to let them know. They will adjust your UC accordingly. When you no longer have income from work, your UC will be adjusted again (go up).
