I’ve just realised I told a waiter I was horny.

I’ve been trying to learn Spanish for a few months now. I went to Spain over Christmas and was trying to use my Spanish as much as possible.

I’ve just realised that instead of telling him
I was hot (ie temperature wise due to the weather) I have told him I was horny/wanted sex.

Bless him he kept a straight face but it’s a hotel I go to regularly and I will no doubt have to see him
next time I travel. Blush

I am too ashamed to share this in real life so I need to vent here. I’m cringing inside out nearly!

@Kb12 - oh I hope so! That would be so much less embarrassing!

ExH was horrified to find out how much my hairdresser appts cost. I explained it’s dried and styled too and he retorted ‘if it’s raining Duncan always gives me a quick blowjob for free!’

@Ali2020 thank you! I suppose that’s easy to mix up. Is this one where use you use tengo rather than soy?

BessMarvin · 20/05/2020 13:49

Isn't tengo I have and soy I am but estoy is also I am?

ScarletFever · 20/05/2020 13:52

Tengo vs soy - Spanish (Latin-American/Mexican) - Memrisecommunity.memrise.com › tengo-vs-soy
5 Feb 2017 - “Yo soy calor” means you want sex.

LongPauseNoReply · 20/05/2020 13:52

In Italian, pecorino is a type of cheese, pecorina is a sexual position. Guess which one I asked for in the supermarket Blush

domesticslattern · 20/05/2020 13:57

My MIL is Spanish, Her english is very good but for some reason she cant say hook (like a coat hook) its always hooker.

I was in the train with her and she was on the phone with her boyfriend who was going to hang up some new coat hooks for her. In this busy train she was speaking loudly into her phone (she is very loud) "Did you find the hookers?" "Where they the hookers I wanted?" "Don't forget to bring the hookers with you later"

serenada · 20/05/2020 14:26

@ScarletFever

5 Feb 2017 - “Yo soy calor” means you want sex.

Well, I never. I have definitely been giving the wrong impression all these years. What is the correct phrase then?

ScarletFever · 20/05/2020 14:40

@serenada i dont know!! i dont think 2 weeks of Duolingo has taught me that!

serenada · 20/05/2020 14:46

Tengo calor according to Google translate

But you 'have' hunger in Spanish so I remember 'tengo hambre' ?

BrexpatInSwitzerland · 20/05/2020 14:49

Not even excusable by it being a second language - it's literally all he speaks:

A colleague of mine, literally, during a meeting asked of another colleague:

"So have you penetrated the client yet?"

Cue the entire room breaking into laughter and our slightly prudish boss turning the approximate colour of a ripe tomato.

In colleague's defense: yes, there is a thing called "penetration testing" in the IT security domain. There's also a very obvious reason, why we don't tend to use it as a verb and commonly abbreviate it to "pen test".

Roselilly36 · 20/05/2020 14:52

DS1 (18) is currently learning Spanish, I will tell him to be careful 😂

notreallybotheredaboutausernam · 20/05/2020 14:52

I spent a year at university in France and embarrassed myself frequently - I told a neighbour I didn't want any more green beans as I was pregnant, told an acquaintance I was frigid (I meant cold) and did a presentation to my entire year group about dog and cat food except instead of saying "cat", I kept saying "pussy". The whole class was laughing and I had no idea why.

Lostvoiced · 20/05/2020 14:58

A long time ago when I worked in a kitchen some of the other staff kept moving the bread products I needed (we had different ideas of where they should go).
So I ended up yelling across the kitchen: "Have you seen my baps?!".

I still think about it sometimes Grin

NancyPickford · 20/05/2020 15:08

You use 'tengo', 'I have', not 'Yo Soy' 'I am'.
So it's tengo hambre - I have hunger,
tengo sed - I have thirst,
tengo calor - I have heat
(calor = heat; caliente = hot)

LaBarbera · 20/05/2020 15:11

Don't worry OP, you said "I am heat" rather than "I'm horny" (which would be "estoy caliente").

serenada · 20/05/2020 15:11

@Nancy so where does English get the 'am' from if not Latin?

NancyPickford · 20/05/2020 15:17

@serenada not sure, but it's the same in French, you 'have' hunger and you 'have' thirst, you don't say 'I am hungry'. Not sure about other European languages.

JaneJeffer · 20/05/2020 15:21

In Irish you have hunger, etc. 'on' you.

serenada · 20/05/2020 15:24

@JaneJeffer

What is the closest language family to Gaelic? Or what origins do we know of in terms of linguistics? I wish I could understand it but I cannot fond a way in. It seems so difficult.

serenada · 20/05/2020 15:27

@JaneJeffer

Also, that translates into an Irish expression in English, doesn't it? To 'have the hunger on you'

JaneJeffer · 20/05/2020 15:40

http://www.udaras.ie/en/an-ghaeilge-an-ghaeltacht/stair-na-gaeilge/ there's a lot of info here serenada. It is a difficult language. We learn it for 13 years at school and still have problems Grin but I speak Hiberno English which is kind of Irish translated into English I suppose.

NancyPickford · 20/05/2020 15:42

@serendada Irish Gaelic is close to Scottish Gaelic and to Manx.
