Lump in daughters neck.

Hi, I'm hoping someone can set my over anxious mind at rest. My nearly four year old daughter has a pea sized lump in the front of her neck. It's about halfway up and just to the left of centre and moves inwards when I poke it. I only noticed it yesterday but then remembered she had a lump in her neck a couple of years ago. I dont know if it's the same one because I must have just forgot about it. I've spoken to the doctor who said it's probably just a lymph node but if its doesnt go down in a few weeks to ring back. She hasn't had any illnesses for months. I suffer terrible health anxiety so if anyone has had something similar in the same place I'd love some reassurance.

My three year old has quite a large lump in her neck. It came up when she was about 18 months. I was very worried and took her to the doctor who diagnosed a swollen lymph node. She had quite a lot of ear infections (still gets them occasionally) when she was younger, so the doctor thought that was probably the cause of the swelling. Anyway, to be on the safe side, she had blood tests and a scan which confirmed that the lymph node was swollen but that it wasn’t a cause for concern. Apparently it’s very common for the lymph nodes to swell form an infection when they’re little and then never reduce in size. She’s three and a half now and the lump is still there and the same size. It’s not as noticeable now as she’s getting bigger though. My childminders son also has a lump at the back of his neck which is a swollen gland which he’s had since he was 2 (he’s now 8). So try not to worry overmuch, it’s very likely that it’s completely harmless and as long as they’re not poorly in any other way I’d just continue to wait like the doctor suggests. Hope that helps Flowers

I had one of these when I was little and it was removed. Non cancerous and apparently fairly common.

My middle DD had a swollen lymph gland on one side of her neck when she was about six.

I was terrified, took her to the doctor who discovered she had shingles!

She's late twenties now, the lump went a few months later and has never reappeared.

Aww thanks so much everyone. Deep down I know its probably nothing serious but this anxiety just always makes me fear the worst. Ive even got a lymph node at the back of my own head I can feel that the nurse explained just never went down after an illness so I shouldnt be this worried about it! Shes a perfectly happy, healthy little girl so im just going to try focus on that. Anyone else feeling over anxious about things since all the covid stuff began? I'm sure just being at home with the kids 24/7 and not seeing family and friends is affecting my mental health xx

Its most likely just a lymph node. This is really common in young children

The other option is a type of developmental cyst which can form in that location. These are totally benign and nothing to worry about. They can be removed if causing annoyance but can also be left.

Given its size its really really doesnt sound like anthing to worry about.
