What Do You Like About Your House?

We downsized a few years ago & although I miss the space, our current house feels so much more like home. DH & I should never have bought our previous property. We didn’t have DD then so there was no way we needed a 4 bedroom house with a big lounge, separate dining room & no less than 3 loos! Now we’re in a 3 bedroom house with one loo! I particularly like the cottagey feel, even though it’s a modern property. I love the kitchen/diner as it has French doors leading out to the garden. And putting the actual place aside, I love the fact that gangs of kids aren’t calling for DD all the time & sometimes tramping through the house & garden. We’re in a very small Close now, although our house is one of two on the main road ( not very busy). The back garden is enclosed & quite spacious. Wish we had flowers & a veg patch etc but our rabbits take up most of the room. DD is going to have a den in the summerhouse & I love that too. DH has painted it & we need to buy a 2nd chair, cube storage & bunting.

Even though our garden is north facing, we are in an elevated position so we get the sun in the morning, then from about 1 it comes round the other side of the house and we can watch the sun set from the living room. We overlook fields and trees, and can watch the horses from our decking.
I love that the house is light and airy, the DCs rooms are lovely now they’re finished. Just our room to do now!

I love the location on the border of Northumberland and Co Durham so endless countryside and walks nearby.

I also like being in a town so we can walk to local facilities. Means we only need one car.

I love the large south facing garden, the double drive so we never have to worry where to park.

I love the big kitchen diner extension with bifolds out onto the garden. I love that we can have a trampoline, playhouse, shed, decking sitting area, giant jungle gym and it still doesnt feel crowded (and the area in front of the bifolds doesn't show any of these things, just plants).

I love that we still have a separate living room to retreat into to watch TV on a night.
I love the playroom so I don't have to have toys in sight at all times. I love that we finally have two toilets.

The only thing I would change possibly is that the third bedroom is fairly small but eldest is 12 now and doesn't seem to care

The proportions. It's got lovely high ceilings and well laid out floors.

The frontage is pretty- it's one of a terrace of 4 stone fronted houses.

The basement as we have our playroom and guest room there.

It's secure. Our rear access is a passageway over neighbour's land which ends in a locked gate.

Awesome view over the estuary from back garden, great to sit up in bed and look over the river and hills beyond. Garden just big enough to not be too painful to keep tidy. Rooms all a good size but from the front it’s not a pretty house at all, hardly much of a hall, no futility room or en-suite but has a hued kitchen diner with doors to a sunny patio from it and from the living room. Don’t think we will ever move

I am lucky to be mortgage free which means I might be able to retire in the next few years.
I am very thankful for my garage which means I don’t have to worry about parking wars.
The house has the potential to be a very nice home. I will never have the money to do big work like taking out walls or extending but will do the best I can on a budget to improve it.

On the edge of a village overlooking the North Downs. Large house, proper hall, lots of space, moderate garden, few neighbours.

Small but well proportioned. Surrounded by greenery. Being able to walk out my front door over miles of countryside without having to go along roads but close enough to a major airport for easy travel in normal times. On the edge of a village which has pretty much everything you could want. All paid for many years ago so it's just about keeping on top of maintenance. In a short row of houses with (mostly) quiet neighbours who respect each others privacy. I thought when I retired I would jump at the chance to move somewhere else, but I can't see me leaving for a good many years yet.

It's light and airy. I love waking up on a Saturday morning with sunlight streaming through the bedroom window. It's easy to look after, keeps clean and tidy without much effort. It's in a quiet neighbourhood.

Gingernaut · 25/05/2020 12:44

It's freehold and close to transport links.

After that, it's a hateful shithole, with lousy neighbours and in a lousy neighbourhood.

I've completely mismanaged my finances and I'm too old to get another mortgage.
