Anyone know anything about Tokyo (or sea monster myths)?

Dd2's geography work is to locate Tokyo on a map using its co-ordinates (done) and then asks about a giant mythical beast rising from the sea to destroy it.

Anyone know what this beast is? Our googling is finding lots of sea monster myths & I'm not sure what it is.

Tia :)

I would guess it's Godzilla.

TravellingSpoon · 19/05/2020 11:58

Yeah, Godzilla.

lucysmam · 19/05/2020 11:59

Oh! I'll google Godzilla, thanks @goingoverground

Godzilla most likely.

NeverTrustASmilingCat · 19/05/2020 12:04

I would think Godzilla, but this mentions a few: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaiju

Japanese folklore is amazingly rich, Umibozu is a type of seamonster.

I wouldn't call Godzilla mythic, given it was invented in 21st century for entertainment, but seems this is what the teacher is getting at.

I think it's actually the Amabie? There was a recent Instagram challenge to draw them.

Godzilla.....

or maybe mogzilla…

Tokyo is class.

MitziK · 19/05/2020 12:19

Might be Gojira. If the teacher actually means Tokyo and not Kyoto.

But I think it could be Yamata no Orochi and the teacher has mixed up mythology for 'in a hugely successful movie franchise and forming an integral part of popular culture of the post atomic 20th century'.

Orochi is the inspiration for King Ghidorah, Gojira's enemy - Gojira (or as was anglicized, Godzilla) is the hero - neither good nor bad, like any mythological Kami, Gojira just is.

Brilliant bit of work if properly structured. Kaiju are awesome and the myths are great, too.

@happysunr1se I didn't know that!

Maybe we'll look at a few of them and ask for further clarification before we do any writing to accompany our map.

Thank you all, the help's much appreciated :)

Godzilla is 20th century (1954).

lucysmam · 19/05/2020 12:43

We read the Godzilla Wiki page iklboo, I had no idea it was that recent! (Not that I'd have any reason to know, I suppose 🤷‍♀️).

We've sent a message to ask if Godzilla's what he's after or if we should be looking at something else.

Just a quick update; it was indeed Godzilla - his reasoning was that the majority of the kids might at least have heard of it!

We're looking forward to the next challenge/research assignment now.
