Looking for opinions/experiences about laminate flooring in bedrooms please? Would you recommend/do you have any regrets?

Should say laminate OR carpet 🤦🏼‍♀️

First thing we did in our current house was rip up the bedroom laminate and carpet all of them. Laminate is hideous at the best of times but in bedrooms is so cold and clinical looking. And looks grubby and dusty constantly no matter how often it's cleaned.

SoNooneRecognisesMe · 19/05/2020 08:45

I'm the opposite, love laminate or tiles in all rooms! Quick hoover and a mop and it's all clean and fresh again. Having used an industrial carpet cleaner on carpets and seen the muck that comes out of something that for all intents and purposes looks clean is quite nauseating! Grin

Could you lay laminate and put rugs on top where you need 'cosy'?

I had laminate in children's room before and the noise was incredible - when they were playing you could hear the echo from down the road. But it was so practical for cleaning! So we laid a big play rug, which could be rolled up and taken outside for proper scrubbing/airing, and that worked well.

I hate laminate so much! When we moved in I hated putting DS in his room to sleep because the laminate made it look so bare and unloved as a space. Carpet transformed it and then other bedrooms.

The lounge still has laminate. We've painted the whole room, had new plaster and paint on the ceilings, new curtains and light fittings. Until we get the floor changed though it will still look tired and cheap.

Reluctantbettlynch · 19/05/2020 10:15

Laminate is cold and noisy, especially upstairs. It is also slippery in socks / if there is a spillage- and spillages can also go through the cracks. If you want a good alternative to it look at vinyl - I have wood effect vinyl and it just looks exactly like wooden flooring. Easy to clean too.

We put laminate in one child's bedroom 20 years ago, carpet for the other one. Their choice. The laminate looks like new, the carpet desperately needs replacing. The advice we had re noise was spend more on the underlay than the laminate and noise has't been an issue. The room is cosy with a nice rug, I don't think carpet makes it any cosier.

1forsorrow · 19/05/2020 10:19

I'm allergic to dust so I don't particularly like carpets.

NewUserNameReq · 19/05/2020 12:59

Wow, very split opinion!

You've all identified my main concerns: noise and 'cold' atmosphere with laminate, and cleaning issues with carpet.

Vinyl might be worth looking into, thank you for that suggestion!

I'm not a fan of laminate in bedrooms personally but think it can look ok if you get "nice" laminate (quick step is a good brand I think) and ideally can do it without the horrid beading around the edge (but may need to take the skirting off to do that)

Susanna85 · 19/05/2020 13:07

Prefer carpet in bedrooms. Wooden floors are also nice.

If laminate, go good-quality. It'll be an investment in the long run & cheap laminate looks dreadful wherever it is.

Zaphodsotherhead · 19/05/2020 13:34

I think 'dirt' re carpets is a bit overstated.

As long as you aren't going to be licking it, does it matter? People lived with carpets for years and years before heavy duty carpet cleaners were a 'thing' (and also adverts for 'how much bacteria is in your carpet? type cleaner fluid...) and nobody died. If you choose the right kind of carpet for the traffic the area will get, they can look good as new with a once-yearly clean over.

Carpet in bedrooms is also nicer when you get up and put bare feet on the floor.

TheTeenageYears · 19/05/2020 14:16

I would be carpet all the way in bedrooms. Only possible exception is if you have underfloor heating, in which case a hard floor is more appealing.

We have never worn shoes in our house - carpet or not. I'm really hoping that one of the positive legacies of Covid-19 is that people remove shoes at the door. Carpets and floors in general stay a whole lot cleaner and more hygienic if people aren't trampling the outside around indoors.

anxietrist · 19/05/2020 14:17

Vinyl is good, we've got kardean

TheSandman · 19/05/2020 14:25

I hate wall to wall carpets and floor coverings of any kind in bathrooms. Just asking for damp problems. .In our house its sanded and varnished floors. Upstairs bathroom is floorboards - sanded and caulked. Downstairs is varnished chipboard - not exactly pretty but functional. No water getting under floor coverings to rot floorboards and joists. I have the washing machine in the downstairs bathroom and regularly use the bath for cleaning stuff other than people. It gets wet and messy. Why make problems for myself?

TheSandman · 19/05/2020 14:27

Ignore that. I misread - I though the thread was about BATHrooms.

Mind you, I don't have carpets in the bedrooms either.

Fluffycloudland77 · 19/05/2020 14:29

It depends what you prefer. We want to replace all carpets to see if it helps dhs asthma

Poetryinaction · 19/05/2020 14:40

I hate laminate because it's cheap looking. My general rule is tiles for bathrooms and kitchens, wood for living rooms, carpet for bedrooms.

CovidicusRex · 19/05/2020 14:41

Really dislike laminate. It gets filthy really quickly (I don’t know how but I find it needs to be cleaned daily to avoid having stuff on our socks but carpets are fine for a week, they’re probably absorbing the dust etc Envy but I just don’t think about it). It’s hideously noise. Also cold and very slippery.

NewUserNameReq · 19/05/2020 14:54

Feel like I'm swaying more towards carpet now.....

God you make me feel old, when I was young it was normal to have lino in the bedroom, well most of the house really, and fitted carpet was a thing of the future.

Hoppinggreen · 19/05/2020 15:38

we have no carpets in bedrooms at all, we have luxury vinyl planks.
Its softer and (IMO) more expensive looking than laminate but easier to clean than carpets. DD has asthma so we replaced her carpet first and when we saw how nice the LVP looked we did all the bedrooms.
We do have laminate downstairs, which came with the house and I much prefer to carpet but we will replace that with LVP too when we can

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 19/05/2020 15:42

Laminate is noisy upstairs. We have it in the office and from downstairs it sounds like they're coming through the ceiling when moving the wheely chair. You hear every footstep from up there. I much prefer carpet.

pontiouspilates · 19/05/2020 15:43

We have Karndean flooring, easy to clean, not cold underfoot and looks great. Highly recommend it
