What is the safest car to have that's also not very expensive?
For motorway/dual carriageway driving etc. in case an incident were to happen?

Define not very expensive?
Believe its called euro ncap rating but look into that and it'll advise the safety of every car out of 5

IWillNotNameTheTree · 19/05/2020 12:38

I drive Volvos, currently a V40, they’re pretty safe.

IWillNotNameTheTree · 19/05/2020 12:40

Ooh just checked and my car has the top NCAP rating of 5! A lot of the other Volvo models do too.

BlueChampagne · 19/05/2020 12:43

Skodas are pretty good and not too pricey. At least, mine served me well when someone drove into me!

Teabaseddiet · 19/05/2020 12:47

Volvos are well known for being built like tanks. Out of my price range though.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 19/05/2020 12:54

I recently bought a new (to me) car and spent a lot of time looking at Ncap ratings. They changed the criteria a couple of years ago and include a lot of the optional extras in their calculations that werent available on older models, Lane assist etc. So it's worth looking out for that.

Volvos are best, skoda, Honda jazz are both good. Obviously the smaller it is the more vulnerable you'll be so I ignored any of the fiat 500, VW up tiny cars.

Hoggleludo · 19/05/2020 12:58

I looked at a Volvo. Was priced at £85,000!!!!

Couldn't believe it

Northernsoullover · 19/05/2020 13:02

I drive an old Focus. Out of curiosity I've just checked its ncap. I was shocked to see its a 5 star. But I'm happy obviously.

justanotherneighinparadise · 19/05/2020 13:09

I was going to say Volvos are expensive!!!

LocalNetter · 19/05/2020 13:16

Thanks everyone so far. My not expensive I mean £3k or lower if possible. I know that removes a lot of cars from the possibilities.

Focus ? You would pick up a (hopefully) decent one for that budget.

allmycats · 19/05/2020 14:27

Skoda, come out of same factories as Audi and VW

IWillNotNameTheTree · 19/05/2020 15:34

My V40 was expensive, the C30 I had before was £1600. Had it seven years and didn’t cost me a penny.

What sort of budget do you have OP?

IWillNotNameTheTree · 19/05/2020 15:35

Sorry just seen you had posted your budget!

LongPauseNoReply · 19/05/2020 15:37

Unfortunately NCAP doesn't include testing on women sized dummies. Your 5 star safety rating applies only if you're a man. Read Invisible Women ... It's terrifying.

We had a Volvo XC60 and it was a tank. I I always felt super safe in it.

LocalNetter · 19/05/2020 17:16

Ah that’s a shame they don’t test on women.

Ideally looking for a smaller car if possible. Sorry forgot to mention that in original post. I don’t know if smaller the size, the less safe it is though. I’m hoping it also depends on manufacturer etc

OP the Honda jazz is a small car and supposed to be quite good according to a pp

LocalNetter · 19/05/2020 22:13

Thank uou

Have a look at Volvo C30s. They are small, and you would pick one up within your budget I’m sure.

PoppyPoppy45 · 20/05/2020 08:51

Hyundai i20 or i10, you get so much for your money and they have 5 star ncap ratings. They're also super reliable.

HeadOfHomeschool · 20/05/2020 08:58

Skoda

NanTheWiser · 20/05/2020 09:43

I drive a 10 year old Volvo C30, (which I love!), this model went out of production about 5 or 6 years ago. They hold their value well, and a 10 year old car sells for about £3000-4000 currently. My daughter loved it so much she bought one last year for £4250 (actually, I bought it for her as she is strapped for cash), and she adores it!
So it might be a bit out of your price range, but if you can find a decent one, snap it up.

Doodlebug5 · 20/05/2020 10:00

Renault captur? I had one for three years. Nice little car to drive and 5 star safety rating (well it was)

You can get one on autotrader for £4450 with 50k miles

IWillNotNameTheTree · 20/05/2020 11:01

@NanTheWiser completely agree, I loved my C30 so much! Only had to let it go because my children are getting bigger and the three doors was a struggle.

IWillNotNameTheTree · 20/05/2020 11:02

I got mine at auction and although it had a lot of miles on it it had been well looked after and did me well for years.
