peri menopause and recurrence of SPD symptoms

SenselessUbiquity · 18/05/2020 19:57

Has anyone experienced return of pelvic pain and instability years after childbirth - maybe associated with peri menopause?

I am creaking around quite painfully and I think it is getting worse.

Does anyone have experience of effective treatment?

thanks!

Yes me and my youngest in nearly 3 years! I started HRT 6 months ago due to early menopause caused by injections i get for endometriosis.

I am so uncomfortable, feel like I am pregnant again. 😢

Not sure what to do either x

I'm following as I had SPD quite badly when I was pregnant. I tend to get mild symptoms when I have my period. Popping pelvis and mild creakyness. Oh please don't tell me I'm in for more suffering when menopause hits. SPD is the reason I have an only child. I was quite lucky that it disappeared completely when she was born. I couldn't bear the thoughts of it coming back again.

I can't find anything when I google.
I don't suppose there is much point talking to a GP. the official medical line on SPD is "it goes away when you have your baby" and in my case it didn't (completely), until I had physio, when my second was 11 months old - my bones were poorly aligned and were manually pushed back into place and I have always felt that having to live with so long out of place has meant it has remained more unstable than it should have been.

I am 48 and haven't had a period for about 6 weeks, which is unusual, so that's why I wondering if there is a menopause connection. Fully expecting to be told to get lost by a gp (at the best of times, let alone now) - but wondering whether the wise women of mumsnet know things that I do not

I had my last baby 3 years ago and had my tubes tied. I'm 43 and I'm peri menopausal according to the doctor. I also suffered with SPD during all my pregnancies starting at 29 weeks in my first and about 5 - 10 weeks in my next 3 pregnancies that I carried to term.
Since I started having symptoms of menopause I have noticed especially around that time of month my pelvis is like I'm pregnant again it's terrible the pain is bad and the clicking is unbearable especially turning in the bed.
My doctor when I visited was all for HRT but I needed a few checks done first now after having said checks she wants me to have the mirena coil put in 🤔 I said no so we're in a stand off now I don't want the coil in and now she won't prescribe the hrt so I'm no help to you but your not alone in feeling this. I find doctors can be dismissive of the pain from SPD and alot of them don't understand it or even know what it is

GrimDamnFanjo · 19/05/2020 01:01

I don't feel it in my pubic bone as I did with SPD but I have noticed increasingly achy hips during part of my cycle.

SenselessUbiquity · 19/05/2020 01:14

Thanks everyone, really helpful.
Has anyone managed to get any medical help with this?
I agree, GPs really don't know what SPD is and I found it hard to convince anyone that I still had issues having had the babies.

I've just remembered but for ages I used to get monthly twinges in the pubic bone - again triggered by hormones. I haven't ever been to my Dr about it though!

HiSenselessUbiquity,
did you find anything to help in the end? I am in a similar situation as you after having an overectomy 2 weeks ago as a preventative measure given I’ve the BRACA gene. I’ve a history of pelvic instability since age 30, both when I came off the contraceptive pill, while pregnant & also post pregnancy …but to a milder extent. The pain came back 7 days post surgery & ive been told it will be 3 months until my body adjusts to the lower hormone Levels until things subside.

Fluckle · 02/07/2022 22:17

I had SPD throughout my second pregnancy, and I'm perimenopausal, or at least I was 4 years ago. I can't remember specifically having SPD symptoms back when it started, but that's because all my joints were painful, especially my hips. Had to stop running for example. A coil and HRT has stopped all of this, as well as a multitude of other symptoms, and I now weight train regularly without any issues. I can't be arsed to go back to running 😅

Perimeno definitely affects collagen in joints and therefore you do get more aches and pains. Might be worth seeing a physio again though to make sure that you've not slipped into any bad postural habits to exacerbate the old SPD in these new circumstances.

PragmaticWench · 02/07/2022 23:15

I think there are two things to do:

  1. a pregnancy test.

  2. a) sort out a full blood scan to check where you are with hormones and general levels
    b) see a physio to work on a strengthening programme and do a lot of research into increasing your mobility/strength.

PragmaticWench · 02/07/2022 23:15

Jeez...ZOMBIE THREAD.

anon666 · 25/01/2023 19:03

Agh, I know this is a zombie thread but I am currently experiencing a resurgence of the SPD I got really badly after my second childbirth.

I've just started HRT as I've been in a lot of joint pain alongst other symptoms.

At first I thought sciatica but then it's mainly the saddle and pelvic floor areas.

I'm in agony.

STEVIE4472 · 20/03/2023 22:33

Hi there Anon666,
Did you ever get any support with the SPD? I am in similar situation..xxx

anon666 · 20/03/2023 23:42

No. However, the problem has settled down. Whether this is because the impact of HRT has stabilized, or in fact was completely separate, I don't know!!!

Just relieved it's over!

Ludexteran · 09/02/2024 21:09

I am 48 nearly 49
.. kids are 18 and 13... I suffered SPD horrifically in both pregnancies...... I started HRT patches 3 weeks ago and SPD is back , could cry with the shocking splitting pains

MovingBack · 22/04/2024 11:05

@Ludexteran how are you getting on now? I'm having exactly the same experience and wondering if it settles down eventually as I really can't stand it right now 😫
