Getting signed off sick

I am really not coping at the minute. I had a panic attack last week and DP wants me to sign off sick.

I don't know how it works though because GP's aren't seeing anyone unless it's urgent. Do I just ring up and tell them I want to be signed off sick? Will they ask questions or just take my word for it?

Sorry if this sounds stupid.

Ring them and ask?

Well you self certify for the first 7 days anyway, then you can call the GP if you think you need longer than that.

They will still be doing telephone consultations so if you tell them you’re struggling they can discuss the options on the phone with you.

I hope you feel better soon.

Ring them and ask for a telephone consultation

The GP would need to do a phone appointment & I think they are still seeing some people.
I don't know if they will just sign you off sick - probably depends on various things.

TooOldForSims · 18/05/2020 08:46

If self certifying is an option at first then I think I will do just that.

But I will ring them later anyway.

My GP got most pissed off when I asked for a sick line straight off the bat.

You’d be better saying “I’m not coping, I’m having panic attacks, I’m stressed with work“ (whatever it is) Etc and see what he says.

Mine seemed to feel like I was just jumping to that option when there could be alternatives like counselling or medication etc which would help me retain control. He had a point. But it depends on circumstances so it may be more appropriate for you than me, so I’d expect he’ll want to hear those circs. Like why does your dp think that going off sick would help.

I think GPs don’t like being told what to do or what you think is best for yourself, they like to tell us. Or perhaps it’s just mine!

I agree with elieza they won't just sign you off without discussing it first.

You may find that going to work actually gives you a routine. I have learnt how to control my anxiety and work actually helps to keep me on an even keel. What will you be doing at home to prevent these attacks?

I was signed off recently for similar reasons. My GP was very understanding but didn't ask too many questions, possibly due to my mental health history though. I had a telephone consultation and was sent a link to download my note via text message.
