Does anyone take amitriptyline for pain relief?

Sorry no traffic on health boards, just wanted to hear from anyone who takes this?

I've been given it for pelvic pain to try and calm down endometriosis pains during lockdown.

I've never taken any antidepressants in my life and concerned about the effect and sleeping?

I'm up in pain unable to sleep, which is why I'm thinking shall I take the plunge and start the packets I've been give by the GP?

Has anyone had success with this as a pain relief option?

it may work (hope so), it may not - depends on your personal body chemistry. It may work with no side effects at all. You may get just the side effects and no pain relief. In this house it was the latter but I hope you get the former.

try it and see - fingers crossed for you. If it doesn't work, return to the GP.

@mencken I can be a bit hit and miss with drugs to be honest.

OP here.. thank you for information, I've just discovered I'm really not very good at taking any drugs. After a episode of flashing lights and feeing sick it appears I've had some kind of reaction to the drug.

So one day and I'm out already, GP is very fed up with me I can hear it in her voice, I'm trying so hard to help the severe ongoing pain in my pelvis and bladder and she just actually suggested I drink more and try barley water 🙄

My urine test all negative, literally nothing can happen and I'm having to just live with this.

Moan over!

I do sympathise, I'm not very good with pain killers and they generally make me feel really ill. I think I was OK with amitriptyline as I would take it when I was going to bed. I always say I fear getting some long term painful condition as the painkillers would be so hard for me to take. I hope you can find something that helps.

Would a TENS machine be any good?

Flamingofolie · 19/05/2020 15:33

It's more commonly used for pain than depression now. I'm on a related drug, nortypaline, long term and its effective.

Not sure why docs insist on amytrypatine when nortryptaline has far fewer side effects.

justkeepmovingon · 20/05/2020 00:22

@Flamingofolie I think that was one she mentioned today, I'll ask her again.

@1forsorrow I tried a tens machine in labour and really disliked the sensation, but I'm heading down that route and thinking it's worth a go, 13 years I'm sure they might of changed? Mine was some awful thing from NCT group.

I'm also going to go back to CBD and try and find a brand where I actually know how much to take.

I have some but no idea on the dose, it was very confusing.

Tonight I have just had a glass of wine, I've not drank since feb but I've had enough and feel relaxed and sleepy.

I take it prophylactically for migraines. I also have bulging discs in my neck and although it wasn’t prescribed for that it helps! I also have endo and it’s been a bit better since taking it. I need painkillers for less time during my periods.

Side effects wise, I was really groggy in the night and waking up when I first started it. I had to gradually increase the dose so that I managed the migraines but could still function. I’m now on 30mg at night and I can get up in the mornings. I should say I am really sensitive to a lot of drugs so this is relatively good for me.
