What age were your DC when they had their first cup of tea?

As a very small child I remember drinking chamomile tea (with MILK, thanks mum), because I wanted to drink tea like a grown up - I think I had my first cup of proper tea at my grandma's house when I was 5 or 6.

I just realised, I had no idea what the norm is these days - when did your DCs have their first cuppa?

(I don't think I've ever used the term 'cuppa' before - I quite like it).

My daughter was probably 2.5 when she first tried it, she'll occasionally now at nearly 4 have a very small mug of milky tea when we have a mug. She loves it.
She does also steal the last sips in my coffee mug even if it's black, have to take my mug straight to the dishwasher now to stop her getting it when i'm not looking

DD is 15mo and has a little sip of mine from time to time. Whenever I have a cup of tea, she suddenly magically appears at my side Grin

9

Both DCs were about 4 or 5 when they started drinking their own cups of tea (once a day, small cup and milky), but had been having the odd sip of mine from age 2 ish (normal leaf tea, not decaf).
They're 10 & 8 now. Eldest still has a cup most days, youngest asks maybe once a week.
They've never had their own coffee but have tried a sip of mine very occasionally.

ComfyCosyGood · 18/05/2020 06:53

DS is 16 months and has tea every day, it's much healthier than squash (which he hasn't yet had) and he loves it. Of course it's Fennel/Chamomile but he loves it!

okiedokieme · 18/05/2020 06:54

In my bottle, DD's the same courtesy of my mother around 7 months

Michaelbaubles · 18/05/2020 06:54

Mine have had tea since they were about 3 or 4 - I drink decaf anyway and would often give them the “second dunk” so quite weak with plenty of milk. Now they’re primary aged they do like a proper cuppa - still decaf but full strength. In fact I just trained DS to make me one, which is very useful!

He also loves coffee when he’s allowed to sip it but I don’t let him drink that. I bought a bottle of Camp coffee though, which is decaf, and he loves to foam milk in the frother thing and make himself a milky Camp coffee! It’s funny watching him make himself his little cappuccino.

okiedokieme · 18/05/2020 06:55

They have regularly had tea in mugs since starting school

GnomeDePlume · 18/05/2020 06:56

About 1, very milky with sweetener (called nursery tea in this house). Only DS will still drink a cup now. All DCs have made it to their 20s unharmed by the experience.

okiedokieme · 18/05/2020 06:58

Ps coffee contains many times more caffeine (though depends on how you brew it, I drink coffee strong)

Passthecake30 · 18/05/2020 06:58

Mine (10 & 12( won’t touch tea or coffee at all, much to dp’s mum annoyance, she implies there is something wrong when they won’t sit down and “have a nice cup of tea...”. I don’t drink tea or coffee so they were never tempted to try it when v young. We all like hot chocolate!

KatherineJaneway · 18/05/2020 06:59

I'm amazed how many teens appear never to have drunk tea or coffee.

Voxx · 18/05/2020 07:01

Mine are 8 and 10 are are yet to have a cup of tea to my knowledge.

Godzillasonice · 18/05/2020 07:05

Mine have been having very milky tea now and again since they were about 1. My dd is now 15 and loves lattes and has been having coffee since she was 14. My younger two haven’t tried coffee yet but like a cup of tea now and again.

Bubbletrouble43 · 18/05/2020 07:06

Dd1 is 21 and still doesn't drink tea or coffee
Dts aged 3 won't be allowed until teenagers, hopefully they will be like dd1 and never develop a taste for it
Don't know why but I'm horrified at children drinking tea or coffee.

MayFayre · 18/05/2020 07:15

11/12?

My 14yo only has the occasional cup of tea
My 12 yo has become a big tea drinker under lockdown

Neither like coffee.
Dh and I drink lots of coffee and occasionally drink tea.

Neeks888 · 18/05/2020 07:30

Around 7, she now drinks a couple of cups a day at 11. Growing up there was always a pot of tea in the mornings for all of us once we were school age.

SarahAndQuack · 18/05/2020 07:35

When she was going on to cows' milk, so around 1. But I drink very weak tea with loads of milk, so it felt quite natural to give her sips. I'll make her a cup on the rare occasions she asks. She'd rather have mint tea, though. I think that's a good alternative if you don't want to give them actual tea but they want to think they're being grown up.

AuntieMarys · 18/05/2020 07:38

About 15.

Sameold2020 · 18/05/2020 07:43

I thought tea prevented iron absorption so wasn't to be given to children.

mynameisntlouise · 18/05/2020 07:46

My son was 1, but it was just warm milk and water with a wink from a tea bag to be honest. He's almost 2, and maybe it's a little bit more tea-y now, he's started having it instead of his morning milk.

My mum used let me drink tea and coffee when I was maybe 12? She'd bring me one in the morning! I'm fine, not a caffeine addict or anything, easily gave it up in pregnancy etc.

vampirethriller · 18/05/2020 07:46

She's 17 months and has a little sip of mine in the morning. I take a flask of milky decaf to our allotment in the afternoons and she likes a little cup of that.
One of my first memories is being in the pram seat with my brother in the pram and drinking tea from my bottle, with my gran pushing us.

Impatientwino · 18/05/2020 07:49

DS is nearly 8 and has been drinking decaf earl grey for a while now. Not every day but often. He's steadily learning the perils of biscuit dunking. We went to a friends when he was about 5 and she offered me tea and he asked if she had any earl grey Grin

We have a coffee machine at home and DH and I have gotten into a 10am cappuccino habit and DS has been having a few sips of mine each day, probably because I have caramel syrup in it!

I gave him cold camomile as an older baby as I read it was good for settling tummies/wind.

DoTheNextRightThing · 18/05/2020 07:49

Blegh. My mum tried me on tea as a child. Hated it. Still do. I was probably about 5?
