Would you consider this urgent?

For the last couple of weeks I’ve had a painful and increasingly wobbly tooth. It’s a tooth that’s previously had a root canal filling done on it so I knew there was a chance that I’d lose it. The pain was manageable but I called 111 as advised by my usual dental surgery but was told I could only have an appointment if I was in unbearable pain so I’ve just muddled on.

On Thursday my tooth got very wobbly and very painful, I still couldn’t sleep due to pain after covering the area in Oragel and taking Nurofen Plus. I decided to pull it out which I did with dental floss and gin for courage. It seemed to come out relatively easily, pain immediately stopped and it looked like it came out cleanly although a fair bit of blood.

When I woke up on Friday morning I had the most disgusting taste ever in my mouth (and I’ve had some grim things in my mouth over the years). I gave my mouth a really good clean and thoroughly used my water flosser and gargled with Corsydyl several times. Taste didn’t go away. As soon as I walked into same room as Dh he asked me if I’d had a bad tummy as the house stank EnvySad. I called 111, explained I’d pulled my tooth out and was concerned I had given myself an infection. As I didn’t have a temperature it was considered not urgent and they wouldn’t refer me to the dentist (the nearest is an hour drive away and you can only go if you have been referred). I then thought I could maybe see my GP and phoned them up but was told they wouldn’t be able to give antibiotics if I didn’t have a temperature and it was more likely to be an infected bit of root that I’ve left in which would need to be removed by a dentist. They said under normal circumstances if the dentist couldn’t do it then they’d refer me to ENT at the hospital but not allowed to do that at the moment.

So now I’m sitting here smelling like a rubbish dump. I’ve been blowing my nose constantly and grey, absolutely unbelievably stinky snot is coming out. I’m constantly sucking mints to just try and cover up the smell but I don’t know what to do. I can’t feel anything in my mouth that shouldn’t be there. It almost feels like whatever is rotting in my face is more in my nose than anywhere else.

Am I just going to have to stay here with my face rotting? I’m genuinely considering trying to find a flight to another country where I can get medical treatment. I don’t feel ill at all but I stink and a bit of me is rotting away. I feel like I’m in the Middle Ages rather than in one of the richest countries on the planet. Any advice from anyone?

GPs aren't trained in dentistry, they are not the place to go for tooth concerns. If you were septic and in need of urgent care etc of course they'd treat you but they have to work within their competencies and they are not trained to deal with dental infections etc. They wouldn't be able to address the underlying cause so I would really try to push to be assessed by a dentist. I don't know what A&E would do if you're well with no temp/swelling really. Sorry you're having such trouble, it really isn't ok!

Just go to a and e

Flowers @FlopsyDoodle
DS called 111 with tooth pain a fortnight ago and got prescribed antibiotics over the phone. How patchy is the service?!

Can you bite on a swab rather than rinse

MillyMollyMardy · 17/05/2020 18:58

Flopsy NHS practices are still providing advice and triage during their normal opening hours. Look up the NHS ones in your area. Call them tomorrow and tell them what you've told us. If you tell them you can't get through to your dentist someone will help.
Your first step is antibiotics, If you have an oro-antral communication it needs assessing by MaxFac but the local practices will have a better idea of what the local set up is at the moment as every area is slightly different.
In the meantime warm, salty mouthwashes to rinse with, avoid blowing your nose, pain relief if you need it.

captainprincess · 17/05/2020 19:09

Oh wow, like a PP said who would have thought you wouldn't be able to get dental care in the UK.
I am also waiting to see the dentist. Mine is also private and on their answer machine it has their mobiles. I did speak to my dentist and as mine isn't urgent it can wait. He did say if it became urgent though I could go to a dental hub where they are basically just removing teeth and only seeing urgent cases. I hope it doesn't come to this.
I hope you manage to get this sorted OP.

TheTiaraManager · 17/05/2020 22:54

Really hope you get a dentist on the phone tomorrow

Mrsmorton · 18/05/2020 07:14

Op, I've had an offer of help from Plymouth. Let me know if you'd like details.

Coldhandscoldheart · 18/05/2020 08:24

@FlopsyDoodle do let us know how you get on?

And also to check you see mrsmorton’s post above re Plymouth. Might be easier than phoning all the dentists in Torquay!

Mrsemcgregor · 18/05/2020 12:34

@FlopsyDoodle I know Cheltenham is probably too far up the West Country for you, but The Regency House Dental Practice in Cheltenham is doing video consultations.

Mrsmorton · 18/05/2020 20:03

Had an offer of help in Torquay OP if you're still around.

BambooWhoosh · 20/05/2020 08:17

@FlopsyDoodle How are you?

FlopsyDoodle · 20/05/2020 08:54

Sorry for not updating earlier. It got a lot worse on Sunday night and 111 eventually agreed to refer me to a place in Plymouth. I had to go down there on Monday morning with Dh and kids in tow as I had a fever at that point and couldn’t drive. The dentist removed a bit of root that was left in and an abscess had formed around it. When he removed it it was like someone emptied an old sewer in my mouth, it was absolutely disgusting. I then had to go to the outpatients at the hospital in Plymouth and had some IV antibiotics.

All better now but Dh had a to miss a days work, had an hours drive to Plymouth and a day in hospital. It would’ve been a hell of a lot easier if I’d just been able to see a bloody dentist when it started hurting last week!

And thanks for the offers of help mrsmorton. I think I was busy having a fever and being mad when you posted them.

Heard on the dental Grapevine today that the order to close practices wasn't actually legal so some are starting to reopen apparently.

There will be huge variation in risk appetite but might provide some reassurance to some people on here.

Glad you got sorted, not an ideal situation!

sarahcoffeelover · 20/05/2020 14:25

Oh Op sounds horrific. Glad you're on the mend now

shookbelves · 20/05/2020 14:27

I'm glad you've finally managed to get some treatment, huge sympathies from someone who has also had the tooth abscess = hospital fun & games.

MillyMollyMardy · 20/05/2020 14:57

Flopsy thank you for updating. I'm glad you're Ok now but I wish it hadn't got to that stage.

TheTiaraManager · 20/05/2020 15:36

Glad you are recovered

FlopsyDoodle · 20/05/2020 17:07

I’m still amazed at just how difficult it was to get an appointment. I’m fairly persistent and can use the internet, it’s worrying to think that if someone isn’t pushy enough they could easily be left in serious pain or develop an infection. This whole thing is causing so many unrelated issues.
