Hi all,

Looking for some advice. A piece (around a quater) of my sons permenant molar has broken off.

Has this happened to anyone elses child before? The tooth only erupted around 18 months ago, so i dont understand how this has happened. Hes had flouride put on his teeth around 6 months ago.

It's possible the enamel hasn't formed properly on the tooth. Try and get a temporary dental emergency repair kit from a pharmacy and cover/ fill the broken area. These are obviously quite hard to come by at the moment so you might need to try a few places. Do get him seen as soon as dentists up and running again.

If he has pain or swelling phone his own dentist for advice and they can keep you right. Referral to emergency hubs is a possibility for people but only for dire emergencies...

Spikey-thankyou for your advice.

How would you know if the enamel hasnt formed and why does that happen?

He hasnt got any pain or swelling luckily.

Normally if the enamel hadnt formed properly it would be picked up at a check up. You can see it.

It cann happen for many reasons, it would be hard to pinpoint what caused it but basically something interupted the development of the tooth. One of those things really

Generally molar teeth break because they are decayed. Whats his diet like? Are you still beushing his teeth for him?

Dd1 busted her brand new adult teeth falling off her bike at 7. They repaired them (re-done periodically as the repairs occasionally came off) and ultimately she can choose to cap or not later.
Dd2 has dental hypoplasia and had several of her molars titanium capped. (She has cp but there are a number of reasons this might be an issue)
Dentist should be able to advise on repair and prevention. It hasn’t caused any issues with either of my girls.

Uncle-how can you see if the enamel hasnt formed? Would i be able to tell?

His diet is not the best, but we still brush his teeth for him. The tooth showed no signs of decay before it happened.

Dark-thanks for the advice. Glad it doesnt cause your girls any issues.

I'm not a dentist but are you 100% sure it's an adult tooth? He's young at 8 to have an adult molar never mind having it from 18 months ago.

UncleFoster · 17/05/2020 18:30

Your first adult molars come through at 6-7 so not too young

It would normally be mishapen and have a sort of mottled yellow/white appearance. Google enamel hypoplasia on molars to get examples.

Decay can form in areas you cant see. You can get decay spreading in dentine that isnt visible looking at the tooth from above which undermimes the enamel. So your tooth looks 'healthy' but isnt. You cant really say theres no signs of decay without an xray tbh

Greenbutterlfy566 · 17/05/2020 18:42

Doyoumind-yes its his adult molar.

Uncle- thanks. I will google it. I didnt know you didnt have to 'see' the decay.
