To think TAs/Teachers could make a good living...

I know a few TAs and Teachers who are in the vulnerable group have posted that they are going to resign as they don't want to take a risk with their health. Obviously though they are worried about the impact to their household income.

My friend's DM is an ex-TA and is doing an hour a day via Zoom with her primary school kid on phonics and maths.

I think TAs & Teachers could easily make up a good proportion of their income by offering 45 minute sessions on Zoom.

So many people are stressed about home schooling and would jump at the chance of having an hour covered.

I haven't seen any posts on FB offering this though which I'm surprised about...

For older children you would be able to increase to small groups which would make the hourly rate quite attractive...

(I've made £10k doing webinars to adults in the last two months, hence my interest).

Teachers resigning now can’t actually leave until the summer holiday though so they’re now going to have time this term (I know that it’s not commonly accepted on here but all the teachers I know are working their arses off at the mo.)

*Not going to have time

I am a teacher. I have done a little bit of private tutoring before (for friends and neighbours) and actually hated it although the pay was good. It was a mixture of the effort involved in dragging myself out in the evening after a day at work and sorting my own dcs and the intensity of sitting with a child 1 to 1 for an hour or sometimes longer. I think Zoom tutoring in small groups could work quite well though, that's actually quite a good idea!

@SnugglySnerd

Yep - no dragging yourself out anywhere.

What sort of age do you tutor?

@CuckooCuckooClock

Good point but they could do 'catch up' classes over summer.

At this rate the summer hols for kids aren't going to be like normal summer holidays and parents won't have their usual childcare options (grandparents etc) or may just feel that their kids could do with some top up lessons after a few months of homeschooling.

My friend was teaching abroad and since returning home has set up a business teaching English via zoom etc. She has a TEFL and had been an interim plan between being sent home and starting a PGCE this September; but she makes a fair bit of money, it's super flexible and she really enjoys it, so it's worked out well. It's different of course as she teaches English to people all over the world, and isn't a qualified teacher here, but the premise is similar, and could work well for those who want to try it.

Tesco are recruiting, they will always have jobs

Jazzled · 17/05/2020 11:59

DahliaDay

Did you miss that they are quitting because they are vulnerable?

wheresmymojo · 17/05/2020 12:01

Why would a teacher or TA work in Tesco for minimum wage when they could set up their own business and earn more money with the skills they have?

Also - they don't 'always have jobs' as both my DH and my friend's DH applied in the last 6 weeks and they had been flooded with thousands of applications.

Hmm

Why post something so obviously bitter?

I had this idea and to be fair haven't advertised on fb but neither of my usual face to face tutees were interested. One doesn't have the tech and the other thought his special needs meant he wouldn't have the attention. I signed up to an online tutoring service (which included giving away a large amount of personal information) but it seems saturated with tutors. I've also looked into TEFL companies but it's hard to sift the wheat from the chaff. Many of them want an initial outlay which seems suspicious.
If I was secondary trained I'd pursue it further but for primary I cant find the market. I think private tuition will shoot up in the autumn once we are back at school and work more fully.

TeaStory · 17/05/2020 12:11

It’s not so simple to set up a such a business. Registering for self employment, accounts, tax, knowing and adhering to GDPR/DPA regulations, Distance Selling regulations, advertising costs... all that is going to put a lot of people off because it’s quite intimidating.

wheresmymojo · 17/05/2020 12:12

FB would be the place to find the market - Mum's groups, buying and selling pages, local town and village FB groups, etc.

@teastory

I can see that it might...it doesn't have to be difficult though.

All easy enough to navigate for someone with a degree.

A teacher wouldn’t be able to work doing private tutoring during school hours at the moment, as they are currently employed and working.

LolaSmiles · 17/05/2020 12:18

I know a few people who are tutoring at the moment. I also know a few people who are considering leaving teaching in the summer after this and a number of them are building their tutoring business.

SnugglySnerd · 17/05/2020 19:44

@wheresmymojo I teach secondary. I've only done a little bit of tutoring for GCSEs and none in the last couple of years. I found that the extra prep plus losing an evening out of the week when I would normally do my regular marking made life that bit more stressful that it wasn't really worth it. Although I did a little bit of tutoring for a neighbour who reciprocated with some baby sitting, that was totally worth it Grin
